Nottinghamshire's latest Covid R-rate revealed

Nottinghamshire's coronavirus growth rate has fallen even further, according to the county's public health director.

While this is a positive step in the right direction, health officials warned the situation still remains serious, with residents urged not to see the rollout of the vaccine as a "silver bullet".

The county's director for public health, Jonathan Gribbin, has worked out the R-rate for both the city and county is estimated to be between 0.8 and 1.0.

This means the growth rate is around -4% to 0%.

If the R-rate is below 1.0 this means the number of new infections is not longer accelerating and reproducing at a concerning rate.

Comparatively the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) has estimated England's R-rate is currently between 0.7 and 0.9.

The growth rate is therefore between -5% to -2% in England.

It is the same in the Midlands as a whole.

Mr Gribbin spoke during a public health briefing on Friday to urge members of the public to keep adhering to the lockdown rules, as the case numbers and infection rate is not declining as fast as they had hoped.

Roughly two weeks ago the R-rate in the city and county was around 0.9 to 1.1.

It was also revealed during the weekly briefing that the situation has been "taking its toll" on NHS staff at hospitals across the county.

It is anticipated lockdown measures will remain in place until March at the earliest.
