Nottinghamshire's latest coronavirus R-rate revealed

The R-rate for Nottinghamshire remains below 1.0 with health bosses confident about moving forward with the roadmap.

The next stage in the easing of restrictions is just over a week away (May 17) when hospitality businesses will be able to open indoors and most outdoor restrictions could be lifted - although gatherings of more than 30 people will still be illegal.

In addition, the R-rate has been calculated to be between 0.8 and 1.0.

The situation has decreased slightly compared to last week, when the R-rate was estimated to be "just under 1.0".

The R-rate, or reproductive rate for Covid, indicates how many extra virus cases are found from one individual positive test.

It calculates the average number of secondary infections produced by a single infected person.

An R-rate between 0.8 and 1.0 means that, on average, every 10 people infected will infect between 8 and 10 other people.

The estimates represent the transmission of the virus over the past few weeks due to the time delay between someone being infected, developing symptoms, and needing healthcare.

The way the rate was estimated had previously been done on a weekly basis, but scientists are now remodelling the rate on a fortnightly basis.

Jonathan Gribbin, public health director for Nottinghamshire said: "I'm very pleased to say the picture across Nottinghamshire county is similar to last week, so that means that it is a positive picture overall.

"There was just one active outbreak reported in all of our care homes across the county - a fabulous improvement on where we were at a couple of months ago."

Mr Gribbin and other health bosses emphasised the need to not move too quickly, and to keep sticking to guidance as further restrictions ease.
