Huge Nottinghamshire sinkhole caused by collapsed sewer pipe

Nottinghamshire County Council highways staff have closed a road after a large sinkhole opened up. CCTV footage from the scene showed the hole started off small but as multiple cars drove over it, it became gradually larger.

A black Skoda drove into a small hole on Carlton Road, near Worksop's train station, at around 7.45am on Saturday (May 6). By Saturday evening, the hole reached close to the pavement from the centre of the road.

A small section of Carlton Road was closed off by Nottinghamshire Police on Saturday. Now, on Sunday, May 7, the county council has confirmed it's closed the road.

Severn Trent has confirmed it was caused by a collapsed sewer pipe. A Severn Trent spokesperson said: "We're incredibly sorry for the disruption and issues that's been caused by a collapsed sewer pipe on Carlton Road. For the safety of everyone, we have closed a section of the road as our engineers work.

"This is a complex repair that requires careful planning, but it will be our absolute priority to get the pipe fixed, and everything put back to normal as quickly, and safely as possible. Again, we're really sorry for inconvenience that's been caused."
