Nottinghamshire R rate drops for first time in 2 months

Nottinghamshire's coronavirus reproductive rate (R) has dropped to a level not seen in just over two months.

There has, in recent weeks, been a decline in the number of new Covid-19 cases across both England and Nottinghamshire's boroughs and districts.

As a result the R rate, which is the average number of secondary infections produced by a single infected person, has finally dropped.

An R number of 1 means that, on average, every person who is infected will infect one other person, meaning the total number of infections is stable.

If R is 2, for example, each single infected person infects two more people.

Public health officials therefore have been advising caution for a number of months with the R rate above 1, meaning the virus was more readily spreading.

However, as of Friday, July 30, Nottinghamshire County Council's analysts revealed the R rate had dropped to between 0.8 and 1.1.

Just a week ago it was estimated the rate was between 1.2 and 1.6.

The last time the R rate was below 1.0 was back towards the end of May, more than two months ago.

While the shift is more positive, the city and county's hospital trusts are urging everyone to get their vaccination if they have not already done so.

This is because hospitalisations are still on the rise (as a result of the delay seen between cases being reported and people being admitted with serious illness), particularly among younger, un-vaccinated people.

Roughly 90% of all Covid patients in Nottingham's hospitals have not had their vaccine, or had just one dose.
