Nottinghamshire pub with fabulous views re-opens after six-figure makeover

A village pub with one of the best countryside views in Nottingham has just got even better.

The Horse & Groom's sizeable beer garden now has an improved alfresco dining area, with heating and festoon lighting, so visitors can socialise outside even though summer has passed.

Customers with little ones will also be able to enjoy the outdoor play area for longer, and an outside bar has been updated to replicate what’s inside the pub as part of a six-figure makeover.

Part of the beer garden at the front of the destination pub in Moorgreen, Newthorpe has been transformed into a beach-style area, with sand-coloured resin flooring, to create a "relaxing holiday feel".

It’s already proving a favourite spot for customers to enjoy a sundowner or two and one of the best views in Nottinghamshire - looking out towards Underwood and Brinsley and as far as Crich on a clear day.

The latest improvements come on top of a £200,000 revamp inside the pub two years ago, which freshened up the decor and furniture to create a cosy contemporary feel.

The traditional coaching inn - part of Greene King – still retains many original features such as open fires and oak beams.

To coincide with the reopening, the pub is introducing a new grill menu under the brewery's Pub & Grill banner, complete with new kitchen equipment for preparing the dishes.

The pub has reopened today, Monday October 11, and will be marking the occasion in style with a special Motown Night relaunch party this Friday October 15, with live music sets from the Dreamettes Motown duo.

General manager Antony Cooper said: "Everything that made this pub great is now even better with the addition of our exciting new grill menu.

"We've been overwhelmed by the amazing response from our community before even opening our doors, so we're now very much looking forward to welcoming back our regulars and, we hope, getting to know lots of new ones."

The menu features char-grilled steak, chicken, fish, vegetarian dishes and burgers as well as pub classics.

Amongst them are piri piri chicken, salmon, a vegan beetroot steak and a 32oz tomahawk steak for £38.99.

Mr Cooper said: "We’re really excited about now being both a traditional pub and a grill restaurant and have invested heavily in our kitchen equipment to ensure that the dishes we lovingly prepare - including our signature 32oz tomahawk steak - are deliciously moist, succulent and fresh.

"We’re also supplementing our grill menu with an extensive selection of pub favourites – including steak and ale pie or our hand-battered cod – along with a lunchtime menu of lighter bites and brunch with a difference, so we’d like to think there’s something for everyone. Best of all, it’s all served by the same recognisable friendly faces.”

The pub is now gearing up for a busy festive season ahead with a series of tribute acts booked for Friday nights, on December 3, 10 and 17.
