Nottinghamshire Police receive 999 call after someone drops keys down drain

A member of the public has dialled 999 to report dropping their keys down a drain to Nottinghamshire Police.

The person said they did not know who else to call and the force has released details of the incident in a fresh appeal to the public to use the emergency number responsibly.

It marks the latest in a string of misplaced 999 calls so far this year which has included a mum reporting that her daughter wouldn't get out of bed, a caller reporting a hedgehog in their garden and someone complaining that they hadn't been offered a refund after a takeaway they had delivered "wasn't nice".

Nottinghamshire Police's control room handles thousands of 999 calls every month and Superintendent Paul Burrows, from the force's contact management department, said they still receive a "high number of misplaced calls."

He said: "The vast majority of the public understand that 999 is only for emergency calls but, despite the work we regularly do in the media, online and over-the-phone to explain to people how to use 999 responsibly, we do still receive a high number of misplaced calls to our emergency number.

"While some of the misplaced calls we receive range from honest errors of judgement to the more unusual, there is a serious point to be made here as every misplaced call our emergency call handlers receive has the potential to delay us from responding to genuine emergencies.

"All we’re asking is that people only call 999 in genuine emergencies and remember that there are other ways to contact us for less urgent enquiries."

Non-emergency enquiries can be directed to the 101 non-emergency number, available 24 hours every day, or alternatively people can visit the Nottinghamshire Police website which offers guidance on hundreds of issues on their advice page.
