Nottinghamshire MP Lee Anderson will not watch 'beloved England' in Euro 2020 after players take knee

Ashfield MP Lee Anderson says he will not be watching England in the UEFA European Championship "for the first time in my life" after the players took the knee before a warm-up game.

Mr Anderson's comments come after England boss Gareth Southgate condemned fans who booed their team as they took a knee before kick-off at Middlesborough's Riverside Stadium, where they won 1-0 against Austria in the first of two warm-up games.

The incident happened before the match on Wednesday, June 2.

Mr Southgate emphasised the taking of the knee was not done to make a "political stand", but was instead an anti-racism gesture and a mark of solidarity between players.

However, Mr Anderson, who represents the north Nottinghamshire constituency for the Conservative Party, disagreed.

He said: "The FA and the England football team have made a big mistake in supporting the taking of the knee before football matches ahead of the European Championships.

"The FA, Premier League and footballers now run the risk of becoming like the Labour Party and that is having nothing in common with their traditional supporters.

"All forms of racism are vile and should be stamped out - but this is not the way.

"For the first time in my life I will not be watching my beloved England team whilst they are supporting a political movement whose core principles aim to undermine our very way of life."

In a separate Facebook post on June 3, Mr Anderson further responded to those, including former shadow chancellor of the exchequer John McDonnell, who branded the actions of some England fans "racist".

He added: "Let me tell you John that I think the vast majority of these fans booing last night are not racist.

"They are more likely to be decent working class folk who love their football and do not share the Marxist views of BLM.

"Furthermore I wager the majority of them are former Labour voters who now see through you. Good luck winning them back."

Ashfield district councillor Dave Hennigan, who represents Sutton Central and New Cross, raised the case of footballer Viv Anderson.

Viv, born in Clifton, was the first black man to play a full international game for England in 1978.

Councillor Hennigan says while progress has been made, he says racism is yet to be eradicated from the game.

He told Nottinghamshire Live: "Footballers kneeling briefly before a match is about raising awareness about racism in not just sports but also society. I am appalled that Ashfield's MP fails to understand this."
