Nottinghamshire keen to replace James Pattinson with 'world class' bowler when he departs

Nottinghamshire are set to recruit an oversees bowler when James Pattinson leaves the club next month.

Pattinson has been called up by Australia A for the tour of England as they look to finalise their Ashes squad.

No date has been confirmed for his departure, although the trip to Kent on June 17 could be his swan-song in a second stint at Trent Bridge which has been punctuated by injury.

After two heavy County Championship defeats where Notts struggled with the bat, it was possible they could look to recruit an eighth senior batsmen.

Fragile Nottinghamshire lose again in the County Championship inside three days

Director of cricket Mick Newell says that is unlikely at present.

"We are likely to still want bowling potency. We aren't choosy, if you like, about whether it's a seamer or a spinner. We want to get a world class player in," he said.

They are also lacking a recognised all-rounder with Luke Wood impressing on loan at Northamptonshire and Paul Coughlin out with a hamstring injury.

The former Durham man has seen a specialist in London to try and put a timescale on his recovery.

Although the club are yet to announce one publicly, Newell is confident Coughlin will play again this season.

Former Nottinghamshire cricketer Brendan Taylor reveals how his wife gave chase to four men who robbed her at gunpoint

"His season isn't over. We're confident he won't need surgery, which would have ended his season," Newell said.

Meanwhile, Alex Hales and Harry Gurney are both in this week's Caribbean Premier League draft.

If one or both is selected, they will not miss any Vitality Blast games as the club would not consent to that, if either player were to request permission to miss Notts matches.
