Nottinghamshire hospital maternity services rated 'good' but told to improve safety

Maternity services at a Nottinghamshire hospital have been rated as 'good' following an inspection. However, the department at King's Mill Hospital, based in Sutton-in-Ashfield, was told to improve in relation to safety by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Sherwood Forest Hospitals (SFH), the NHS trust that operates the hospital, said it was "immensely proud" of its 'good' rating. The report said there was a positive culture within the service and staff felt respected, supported and valued.

"Both women and staff felt they could raise concerns without fear, and we were pleased to find that leaders were visible and approachable, for them to do so," said deputy director of operations in the midlands, Greg Rielly. "It was encouraging to see that people could access the service when they needed it, and didn't have to wait too long for treatment, with all staff committed to continually improving services."

However, concerns were raised with regards to safety, with the trust dropping from 'good' to 'requires improvement' in that category. "We found that the triage system was ineffective, with a multi-option phone line meaning calls could end up being put through to the labour ward," said Mr Rielly.

“Additionally, while staff told us they knew how to prioritise calls of clinical concern, this wasn't always clearly documented, meaning leaders couldn’t be assured appropriate triaging had taken place." He said the CQC would continue to monitor the service.

Phil Bolton, chief nurse at SFH, said the trust was incredibly proud of the positive findings highlighted in the report, which was released on Thursday (February 22) after an inspection last November. "The 'good' rating rightly recognises the fantastic work our maternity colleagues do, day in and day out, despite the ongoing challenges placed on maternity services," he said.

"Continuous improvement is one of our top priorities and work is well underway to address the points raised, as well as others we have identified." Director of midwifery Paula Shore added: "We are immensely proud to be rated 'good' again for our maternity services.

"This CQC report is an important measure and reinforces the message to our expectant and new parents, and colleagues, about the maternity service provided at Sherwood. We continually strive to improve our services and know there are further improvements required to make Sherwood an even better place to work and receive care."
