Nottinghamshire health bosses react to 'national lockdown' reports

Public Health bosses have reacted to the news that health secretary Matt Hancock cannot rule out another national lockdown.

He said the Government wants to use "local action" to combat the rise in cases, but could not rule out the drastic measure.

The government has confirmed that large parts of the North West, Yorkshire and small parts of the Midlands such as Oadby and Wigston will be subject to new coronavirus restrictions.

Public Health director for Nottingham, Alison Challenger said: "We want to avoid a national lockdown. It was difficult at the early part of this year; what we are trying to do is manage the best we can in our local areas.

"No one wants a national lockdown and not all areas of the country are experiencing the virus in the same way.

"The South West has a lower level of Covid than the North West for example.

"It would not be the best thing to have a national lockdown that impacted on everyone when the virus levels are lower so that's very much the rationale in having local arrangements.

"I would prefer to have local arrangements that we can flex and bring in as we need to and if we need to.

"I think if there was a scenario where it was escalating and all areas were affected then a national lockdown would be possible in that situation.

"I don't have indication it is close at this time. I think we are trying our best to manage it in our local areas."

Public Health bosses are encouraging the public to continue to wash their hands, avoid mixing with more than six people indoors and outdoors, wear face covering and keep their social distance.
