Nottinghamshire firefighters supporting Whaley Bridge emergency response in Derbyshire

Nottinghamshire firefighters are among the emergency services working tirelessly in response to a damaged Derbyshire dam threatening to burst over a Peak District village.

Extreme rainfall earlier this week led to fears that the Toddbrook Reservoir could collapse.

Around 1,000 people living in Whaley Bridge have been evacuated with forecasters predicting a further two weeks' worth of rain could fall this weekend.

On-call crews from the Collingham, Newark, Blidworth and Sutton-in-Ashfield fire stations are supporting the emergency response.

A team from Stapleford Fire Station has also been at the scene.

A statement on the Stapleford Fire Station's Facebook page on Friday (August 2) read: "Our team are currently supporting firefighters from across the country at the major incident in Whaley Bridge.

The team are currently providing welfare support and using our fuel bowser as ensure that the high volume pumps continue working."

In an update later in the day, a statement added: "We’ve just taken off two crew members who have been here all night and our team are planning on being here for some time yet.

"Fire crews, the military and our partners are working very hard to reduce the amount of water in the reservoir and stop the damage using these Chinnock helicopters."

Whaley Bridge residents briefly returned to their homes to collect essentials after the environment minister warned lives are in danger if the dam breaks.
