Nottinghamshire Covid R rate confirmed as Delta variant becomes 'dominant' strain

Public health bosses have confirmed the latest R rate for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, which has dropped slightly compared to recent weeks.

The R rate for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire is currently estimated to be between 0.7 and 1.1. This is lower than the national average, which stands at 1.0 to 1.2.

The reproductive (R) rate, is the average number of secondary infections produced by a single infected person.

The figure had remained unchanged for the past four weeks, when the rate was between 0.8 and 1.1.

The news comes after it was confirmed the Delta (Indian) variant is now 'dominant' in Nottingham city, making up around 85% of cases.

David Johns, interim director of Public Health for Nottingham City Council, said in a media briefing on June 4: "The Delta variant is dominant in Nottingham city. That isn’t likely to change.

“We are at the cusp at the moment and our understanding of where we will head in a few weeks is a bit unknown.

“Importantly, we are still in that window of opportunity where we can collectively have the ability to influence what happens next in Nottingham city.”
