Nottinghamshire care home deemed 'unsafe' for residents is put in special measures

A Nottingham care home has been deemed "inadequate" and unsafe for residents by the Care Quality Commission.

Millington Springs in Portland Street, Selston, currently provides care for 20 older adults, some of whom have dementia. It has the capacity to cater for up to 42 people.

The Care Quality Commission concluded its residents were not safe and were at risk of avoidable harm.

A recent inspection, which was carried out in October last year, found issues with staffing, unsafe conditions for its residents and the handling of medication.

It concluded the home environment was in a "state of disrepair" with unsecured wiring and flooring placing residents at risk.

The report states: "People were not always supported in a safe way.

"We found medication was not being managed safely. Medication was not always counted; storage temperatures were not monitored and some prescribed cream were out of date.

"Health and safety issues were due to a lack of maintenance work being completed around the home, window restrictors were not in use and radiators with broken thermostats were hot to touch.

"Infection control practices were not always recorded to show that cleaning had been completed. Some equipment was not clean.

"Care plans did not always contain the information staff needed to provide effective and safe care for people."

The manager of Millington Springs had been absent for a few weeks before the inspection and a deputy manager was overseeing the service remotely, due to the Covid-19.

Inspectors found this had led to many processes not being properly followed, for example risk assessments and care records which were often carried out incorrectly or not at all.

There was also not enough staff with sufficient training, a CQC report concluded.

Millington received a 'good' rating in the caring and responsive inspection categories, but was rated inadequate when it came to safety and how well-led the home was.

In addition, the effectiveness of Millington was deemed to require improvement.

The home has now been placed in special measures and will be subject to another inspection within the next six months to check for any significant improvements.

The care home had twice previously been rated as 'requires improvement' by the CQC in its most recent inspections.

A spokesperson for Millington Springs said: "As you can understand our priority is the care of our residents during these very trying times.

"We are working very closely with the CQC throughout the inspection process and continue to do so through our agreed action planning."
