Nottingham youth club teams up with Prince's Trust to 'empower' and provide opportunities to youngsters

A Nottingham youth group has teamed up with the Prince’s Trust to continue supporting young people in the community ensuring they gain skills and qualifications through programs in sports and education, self development and enterprise. The Pythian Club, founded by Benjamin Rosser is working with the Prince’s Trust with a collaboration called ‘Empowering Up’ which was set up by King Charles lll to improve the lives of disadvantaged young people.

The Prince’s Trust has helped many young people achieve their goals and have seen the likes of Naughty Boy and Idris Elba use the service who are now ambassadors. The Pythian Club helps many young people across the city to engage young people in: sports, drama, music, education and more.

Last year, The Pythian Club helped feed thousands of people in the winter as the cost of living crisis continued to impact many in the city.

One young person the programme is helping is Miles Green, 25, from Nottingham. Miles, who has Down's Syndrome, has big plans of becoming a football coach in the future.

He said: “I like it [the programme], it’s good. I would like to teach the kids to play football and I like watching.” This is Miles’ second time on the course.

The Nottingham Forest supporter continued: “I want to get into teaching and look after kids, I like it here because I’ve met new people too.”

Miles' mum, Shirley Green also feels like the course has benefited her son. She said: “He [Miles] loves it, I’ve supported him to get here and he makes his way back which is a big step.

“Miles loves football and he’s made friends here. I think there does need to be more things like this around, it wouldn’t harm anyone. Miles has Downs Syndrome and learning difficulties but this has definitely boosted his confidence.”

Evan Allan, the Youth Development Lead for the Prince’s Trust spoke about the success of the programme. Working with 16-24 year olds, he said “the aim is to build people’s confidence and raise expectations.”
