Nottingham Trent University changing re-sit policy after 'tragic' death of student Alex Hayter

Nottingham Trent University will be changing its procedures on how it informs students whether or not they will need to re-sit a year of study following the death of a student.

Alex Hayter, 21, who was studying computer science at the university, was found dead in Hampshire on September 21 last year.

Hampshire Police says he lived in Abbotts Ann, where his body was discovered after he was reported missing three days before.

A spokesman for Nottingham Trent University told Nottinghamshire Live, while it has policies in place to support students suffering with mental health conditions, it was not known Mr Hayter required such support at the time.

It will now be changing its procedures in response to his death.

The spokesman added: "We were saddened to hear about the tragic death of computer science student Alex Hayter and our thoughts remain with his family and friends at this difficult time.

"The university is providing bereavement support to any students and colleagues who may have been affected and would welcome anyone who needs support to come forwards.

“NTU has policies and procedures in place to support students with known mental health conditions or wellbeing concerns, and we proactively approach students who are displaying any cause for concern.

"Alex was not known to require such support and in light of his death we are adapting our processes for students who are required to re-sit a year of study."
