Nottingham Theatre Royal panto cancelled as government gives no indication as to when when theatres can reopen

For the first time in many people's memory the Theatre Royal's panto has been axed.

The annual innuendo extravaganza - a staple of many families' Christmas ritual - will not go ahead as planned as uncertainty still surrounds the Government's plans to reopen theatres.

Boris Johnson and his team of experts will not even start to look at reopening venues like the Theatre Royal until November at the earliest meaning both the council and panto giant Qdos Entertainment had to make the decision to pull the plug before its stars were announced.

This year's panto was previously announced as Robin Hood which, all things being well, will now take place next year.

Organisers are exploring other options for Christmas entertainment.

Councillor Dave Trimble, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture & IT at Nottingham City Council, said: “The pantomime at the Theatre Royal has always been the biggest, most spectacular Christmas production in the region with sell-out audiences across the run.

"Unfortunately, the uncertainty that the current situation brings means we would be unable to replicate this on stage or within the auditorium this year. We have therefore taken the decision to reschedule Robin Hood as next year’s pantomime and look forward to presenting the ultimate pantomime adventure in its rightful home then.

"Whilst it is clearly not possible to undertake a full-scale production this Christmas we are continuing to explore other options with our pantomime partner should the situation change closer to Christmas.”

Customers will be contacted by the venue directly to confirm the date and time of the performance that their tickets have been rescheduled into.
