Nottingham students could be entitled to a £50 refund for their TV licence

With lectures coming to an end, exams looming and coursework results being released, the end of the university year is nearly here.

And that means three months of enjoying summer, making plans with friends and not having to worry about studying.

But this will, of course, require some additional funds, some of which you could get from a TV licence refund.

TV Licencing realised last year that a lot of students weren't using their TV licence for a large chunk of the year so changed the refunding rules.

Although not many students are aware that they could be entitled to a refund of up to £50.

What do I need to know?

Eva Crossan Jory, NUS Vice President (Welfare), said: “A TV Licence is valid for a whole year, so if students purchase a licence in October they can apply for a refund when the academic year has finished and they are no longer living in student accommodation.

"Many could end up saving some much-needed cash as they go into the summer break."

The monthly fee of a TV licence is worked out based on 12 months.

So if you move back to your parent's home for the summer, where there is a TV Licence or one isn't required, you could be entitled to a refund.

Rachel Roberts, spokesperson for TV Licensing, said: “Many students are unaware that they can claim a refund on their TV Licence when returning home for the summer and so could be missing out on an extra £50 in their pockets.

“Applying for a refund is quick and easy and we encourage all students who are eligible, or their parents in some cases, to take advantage of it."

Ms Crossan added: “If students are uncertain about rebates or need to discuss finances they can approach the advice centre in their university, college or students’ union.”

How do I apply for a refund?

Applying for a refund is simple and can be done online or over the phone.

All you'll need is your licence details and evidence that you no longer require a licence, for example a tenancy agreement that proves the end date.

The online refund form can be found here or you can call 0300 790 6113.
