Nottingham shoppers have their say on what could replace Mothercare store after closure

Nottingham shoppers have provided a mix of suggestions as to what could replace Mothercare after its closure - from a children's play centre to new clothing stores.

Mothercare has now gone into administration and is closing all its remaining 79 stores across the UK with all stock discounted.

The retailer has been a staple on the high street since 1961.

The move into administration put 2,500 jobs at risk, including around 20 at the Castle Marina retail park.

The store at Castle Marina remains open but a closing down sale is on now.

Shoppers spoke of their sadness at a "well-known name" closing and suggested that what takes its place needs to have a wide appeal to families and shoppers.

Kate Carver, a 29-year-old mum of two of Carlton, said: "It's a huge shame really to see it going. It's been there as long as I can remember and I've got some good things from there in the past when my two daughters were babies.

"I think with the growth of online shopping, it should become something completely different like a children's soft play area.

"If they incorporated a coffee shop as well I could see it being a big hit.

"I think that would be really popular to be honest. There are a lot of shops on this retail park and then also at the Queen's Drive one too."

Kiera Thomson, 33, of The Meadows, added: "Obviously I'm gutted that it's going and jobs are at risk. It's never good to see. It was like that when Toys R Us shut nearby.

"I think it would be brilliant if a Primark came out of the city and took on the place. It would bring shoppers in and get them using the restaurants and other stores around the Castle Marina.

"Primark is always so popular with people, so I think it would make sense."

Tom Bridges, 25, of Lenton, wanted to see a "high-end retailer" take on the site.

"I can't see it happening but I think something like a department store that stocked some really nice clothes would be good.

"I reckon you could build a restaurant in there as well to encourage people to come and shop. I hate clothes shopping online, I never know what'll fit me. There is still a place for the High Street."

Current stores at the Castle Bridge Retail Park are Bensons for Beds, Carpet Right, Costa, Currys, DFS, Furniture Village, Harveys, Home Sense, Pets at Home, Tapi Carpets, Ultimate Outdoors, Ultimate Cafe and Wren Kitchens with three hours free parking available to shoppers.
