Nottingham's Victoria Centre evacuated over suspected gas leak as shoppers told to leave

A shopping centre has been evacuated after a suspected gas leak, emergency services have said.

People have been asked to leave the Victoria Centre in Nottingham and avoid the area.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said four appliances were rushed to the shopping centre just before midday.

Local residents reported traffic jams and bus diversions in nearby Upper Parliament Street as the road near the shopping centre was closed due to the incident.

A statement from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service reads: "We have four appliances in attendance at Victoria Centre in Nottingham because of a suspected gas leak.

"People are being evacuated from the building and we ask people to avoid the area."

A customer posted a video of people leaving the shopping centre on Twitter, with the caption: "Been evacuated on a busy Saturday morning."

The clip shows bargain hunters exiting the Victoria Centre in the city centre after the security alarm went off.

Another customer wrote: "I was walking around Victoria Centre killing time [until] my sister arrives but then the alarms went off and we got told to evacuate, now there’s fire engines here."

Another man who tweeted about the evacuation said: "Typical that I was trying trousers on at the time."

A Victoria Centre spokesperson told Nottinghamshire Live: "We can confirm that there has been an incident in the area and on the advice of the fire service we have had to evacuate the centre and await further instruction.

"We’re unable to share any further information at this stage but we will issue an update as soon as we can."

Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies on nearby Convent Street, which is hosting an open day, said: "If you're coming to our college-level open day please make sure you leave enough time for travel.

"Roads around Confetti are currently seeing high volumes of traffic due to the ongoing incident on Upper Parliament Street. Our last campus tour will leave at 3pm."

The Nottingham Playhouse also warned potential theatre-goers of traffic jams and asked to plan their journeys ahead, saying: "If you're heading into the city centre today for our performances today, please allow extra time for your journey."
