While some people will spend New Year's Day at home nursing hangovers, others will be hitting the shops after running out of milk or to hunt down a bargain in the January sales.
Not all shops will be open on January 1 though. Some of the big name supermarkets and leading high street stores will be closed to give their staff an extra day's break over the festive period.
Here's the opening times for stores across Nottinghamshire:
Aldi: Closed New Year's Day. Will reopen Sunday, January 2, 9.30am to 4pm.
Tesco: Extra stores will be open 8am to 6pm and Express stores 8am to 10pm. Petrol stations will be open 8am to 7pm.
Asda: Opens 10am and closes at 5pm.
Morrisons: Most stores will be open from 9am to 6pm.
Lidl: Closed New Year's Day. Back open Sunday, January 2, 10am to 4pm.
M&S: Albert Street, Nottingham, Giltbrook and Mansfield stores are closed New Year's Day. Reopening times on Sunday, January 2, vary (check website for details). Food shops in Chilwell, Netherfield and West Bridgford are open January 1, from 10am to 6pm.
Sainsbury's: The bigger stores are open 8am to 8pm. Sainsbury's Local shops open at 7am and close at 9pm.
Waitrose: The company says shops will be closed on New Year's Day, with the exception of a small number which will have varying opening hours between 7am and 10pm. Customers are advised to check times using the branch finder tool on its website.
Victoria Centre: The shopping centre will be open 9am to 6pm but opening times vary at individual shops. Birds will be closed New Year's Day; Boots open 11am to 5pm; CEX 11am to 5pm; Holland & Barrett 9am to 5pm; House of Fraser 10am to 5pm, John Lewis closed; McDonald's 11am-11pm and Next 10am to 6pm.
