Nottingham's new swimming pool is given proposed opening date

A leisure centre in Hucknall is due to open a second extra pool and further upgrades as part of a £22 million investment scheme. The plans for the venue are said to be 'on track' for the proposed opening in Spring 2023.

The facilities are being described as a 'victory for Hucknall' by Councillor John Wilmott who gave an update on its progress. The leisure centre is part of an improvement package which will see changes to leisure and transport in Hucknall and it is currently costing £2.5 million.

Images show the proposed plans for the site and also diggers ready to start work on the pool. It will offer swimming lessons, family sessions and water activities for older people as well as those with long-term health conditions.

Some of the improvements being made alongside the extra pool include the installation of a new health and fitness gym located on the ground floor, refurbishment of the main entrance area, which now includes a seating area and food and beverage pod, 3 new group exercise studios which will include an exercise studio, indoor cycling studio and Earth studio.

There will also be redecoration and refurbishment of the squash courts and sports hall floor and the installation of a new Atlantis Pool inflatable, to increase the range of activities on offer. A new health hub facility will offer free-of-charge use to community groups to support the health and well-being of local residents.

Wilmott, an Ashfield Independent councillor said: “It’s amazing to see work progress as our promise comes to fruition. When the Ashfield Independents took over the Council – your Hucknall Councillors presented a shopping list of improvements we wanted. An extra swimming pool and massive improvements was top of the list. This is a victory for Hucknall.”

Councillor Wilmott added, “By the time we are finished, your Ashfield Independent Council will have invested £5.5million in Hucknall Leisure Centre. This is the biggest investment since my lookalike, Duncan Goodhew opened it in the 1980s. By the time we are finished, it will be bigger and have more state-of-the-art facilities than when we built it. It’s no wonder that people are saying that Ashfield has the best council-run leisure facilities in England.”
