Nottingham's mushy pea stall is back - and they taste just as good as ever

It's not Michelin-starred and it's not hipster - but it is one of Nottingham's oldest food traditions.

Just like Stilton or Bramley apples, Nottingham is renowned for mushy peas and mint sauce - a simple local delicacy that's cheap and comforting.

Forget garden peas and petit pois, these are the best of the bunch - or should that be pod?

The Goose Fair favourite was on sale all year round at the mushy pea stall in Victoria Market but during the pandemic it looked like it was the end of the road.

Trader Claire Fisher said she was handing her notice in because custom had dwindled so much during lockdown.

However, the good news is that Claire has had a change of heart and has reopened the stall, where once again she's serving up steaming bowls of green goodness every day but Sundays and Bank Holidays.

For £1.50 customers can have a satisfying snack - preferably with a generous spoonful of mint sauce for that added vinegary tang. Or if you really, really love peas, go large for £2.

Claire, who has run the stall for four years, previously said she was closing for good at that end of 2020 since she wasn't making enough money to support her two children aged eight and 13.

However, after financial help from government grants Claire is back doing what she loves although business remains slow at the indoor market in Victoria Centre.

She is hoping trade will pick up but one of the fears is that mushy peas just aren't cool with the younger generation.

Despite their grandparents and parents being regulars for more than 60 years at a venture first started by the 'the hot pea man' Eric Dickinson from his stall in Central Market, it seems young food lovers would rather visit a vegan cafe or coffee shop, said Claire.

Lack of money shouldn't be a stumbling block for anyone feeling the pinch.

The stall has a board covered with sticky notes from kind-hearted strangers offering a free meal or drink to anyone who has lost their job or is having a tough time.
