Nottingham's famous peregrine falcons produce an egg at top of university building

Nottingham's much-loved peregrine falcons have produced an egg, to the delight of those who have been watching them over the years via webcam.

The birds failed to produce any chicks in 2018, but the first egg this year has now appeared at Nottingham Trent University's Newton building.

Peregrine falcons are the world's fastest animal, reaching speeds of up to 240mph during a dive - known as 'stooping' - to catch its prey.

It is the biggest falcon in the UK and over the last couple of decades, the birds have started to move further down south, having typically lived in the far reaches of the north and west of the country.

Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust's head of conservation, Janice Bradley, said: “The popularity of the Nottingham peregrine cam highlights the value that people place on being able to connect with nature.

"Whilst the camera was originally installed to provide added security for the birds due to their protected status, it now provides a window on nature for thousands of people across the globe.

"We really enjoy working with our partners at Nottingham Trent University on this project and have our fingers crossed for a successful nesting season and feel that the ability to connect with nature will be beneficial in the weeks ahead, especially for people unable to get into the great outdoors."

The falcons successfully reared a chick in 2019 and despite storms and heavy rain over the past few months the birds have now produced their first egg of 2020.

You can watch the falcons go about their daily business in their nest overlooking the city by visiting the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust's website.
