Nottingham's best and worst areas for harassment, threatening and abusive behaviour

New national crime figures have revealed the best and worst areas around Nottingham for incidents of harassment, abuse and threatening behaviour.

The figures, from the Police UK Home Office database, break down crimes reported to police in individual categories and show exactly how many incidents were recorded in the city's neighbourhoods.

These include crimes such as burglaries, anti-social behaviour, shoplifting and robberies.

It also includes public order offences, which incorporate crimes like abuse, harassment, threats, affray, riots, intimidation or violent disorder.

Under this banner, causing intentional harassment, alarm or distress is also included - as well as hate crimes.

And the figures show that, across Nottingham, the Radford and Park area recorded the most cases of public order in December 2020 and January 2021 combined.

In total, 25 incidents were reported to police during the two-month period, though this had fallen slightly from 28 in the same period 12 months earlier.

Other areas recorded similar numbers, including 24 in Bulwell, 23 in both Bilborough and West Bridgford, and 22 in both Clifton and the Arboretum.

The area to record the fewest public order offences in this period was in the Kimberley and Nuthall area of Broxtowe, where just four incidents were reported to police.

The Police UK figures do not break down which type of public order offence was reported for each individual incident.

The figures come after harassment and threats hit the headlines following the death of Sarah Everard, with women speaking out about intimidation they have suffered on the city's streets.

Nottinghamshire was the first area in the country to label misogyny a hate crime, meaning any offences targeting women on the basis of their gender would be taken more seriously by police.

Chief constable of Nottinghamshire Police, Craig Guildford, said since the death of Sarah Everard a number of forces had been in touch to find out what Nottingham was doing on the issue.

He said that while the volume of misogyny calls was not high, each incident was taken seriously.

He said: "I have had quite a lot of phone calls from other forces about how we approach it and how we worked with partners to improve confidence among women.

"We do not have a huge volume of these reports. However, once contact is made that can identify an offence such as stalking and harassment we take it seriously and once we know we can investigate and refer victims to support services."

The figures also come after MPs passed the controversial Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, which looked to clamp down on issues surrounding protests and public order.

Below are the figures for public order offences in each neighbourhood of Nottingham for December 2020 and January 2021, compared with the same number for 12 months earlier.
