Nottingham restaurant which was evacuated after fire 'playing it by ear' on opening today

Staff at a restaurant in Nottingham city centre which had to close following a fire say they are "playing it by ear" as to whether they will open today.

Firefighters were called to Queen Street at 5.36pm on Friday, December 6, to deal with the incident, which involved an extractor fan outside George's Great British Kitchen.

The restaurant, near the Brian Clough Statue off Old Market Square, is currently closed but staff said the situation this morning was being assessed.

The staff members, who did not want to be named, said: "It was an outdoor extraction fan that caused the fire but there hasn't been any real damage.

"People are in there now looking at the electrics and everything from a health and safety point of view so today we're playing it by ear really.

"At the minute it's out of our hands until we're given the go-ahead."

Queen Street was closed for most of the evening due to the fire before re-opening at around 10pm.

Nearby restaurants including Red's True Barbecue and Bill's were evacuated but both are now open today.

A statement posted by Red's True Barbecue on its Facebook page thanked customers for their "patience and understanding" and confirmed that "all is well and we're officially back open."

Last night's fire was attended by firefighters from the London Road, Stockhill and Stapleford fire stations, as well as police officers.
