Nottingham restaurant to launch autism-friendly dining

The lights will be dimmed and the music will be turned off at a Nottingham restaurant's new autism-friendly 'quieter lunch'.

Usually the atmosphere is loud and buzzing at Latin American-themed Las Iguanas, in Chapel Bar, but the vibes will be toned down every Tuesday between 11am and 1pm, starting on April 2 -  which happens to be World Autism Day.

General manager Lewis Morton said staff would avoid making loud noises and disturbing diners by moving tables, chairs and stock.

A poster will be placed outside to tell customers that it is a quieter lunch and chefs will be on hand to alter any dishes if necessary.

The restaurant has been working with Autism East Midlands to set the scene and representatives from the charity will be attending on Tuesday.

At the first event, free samples of the new menu will be given away and there will be 20 percent discount on food every week.

Lewis said: "For people who are sensitive to stimuli, like many people with autism and hypersensitivity, a visit to a restaurant can be extremely disturbing because of all the loud noises and goings-on.

"We want everyone to be able to enjoy a bit of Latin life in their most comfortable environment and to give these guys the first taste of our new menu."

The new spring/summer menu includes 17 new dishes. Burrito bowls, chicharrónes and truffle mac and cheese have been added to favourites such as nachos xinxim and enchiladas.

Hombre for Men, a £24.95 wings and beer package, is new along with a twist on afternoon tea with smoking Cuban sandwiches and Havana Club Rum tea. The drinks menu has also has a revamp with 17 new cocktails including Rock Star Martini and Pineapple Punch.
