Nottingham reacts as two week firebreak lockdown after Christmas considered

Nottinghamshire Live readers have spoken out in response to news that more restrictions could be on their way after Christmas.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Government has reportedly been told by scientists that tougher measures need to be brought in “very soon” to stop the spread of the new and more transmissible Omicron variant of coronavirus.

Leaked minutes from the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), seen by the BBC, show scientists warning against delaying further interventions until 2022.

It is now understood plans for a two-week 'firebreak' lockdown - such as a ban on indoor meetings with people you don't live with - are being drawn up.

These restrictions could come into force just after Christmas.

The news has divided opinion from Nottinghamshire Live readers.

They were asked whether or not a firebreak, or circuit breaker lockdown would get their support.

Pauline Parker says: "Absolutely yes.

"And make our schools safe. We need schools to be open but we need to protect our children and our staff."

And Katie Hales said: "Yes, most definitely, as someone classed as vulnerable. I absolutely get we need to live with it but also if I was to get it and need medical help, would the NHS be able to and cope with it."

Others resoundingly said no to tighter restrictions.

Maurice Moore says: "Most definitely not. This is way past a joke."

And Paula Bay adds: "No. It would not just be for two weeks, it would turn into months again.

"It does so much damage to people's mental health , it is just delaying something that we cannot keep running from."

The general consensus from the replies to the question was a "no" answer.

The UK reported more than 90,000 new Covid cases in another record daily total on Friday and in Nottinghamshire the new variant is now the dominant strain.

Hospitals in the city are at the highest alert level.
