Nottingham pubs and bars may close earlier than usual on first weekend of lifted restrictions

Nottinghamshire's chief of police believes most bars and pubs will be closing earlier than planned this weekend and it won't be the big party atmosphere some might expect.

Assistant chief constable of Nottinghamshire Police, Steve Cooper, is encouraging people to check if bookings are required to avoid disappointment.

He said there will be "more officers around the city centre than you have seen since Christmas" as the force plans for the first weekend of lifted restrictions.

This includes bars, pubs and restaurants allowing people inside and outside their venues.

One of his concerns is that some revellers may decide to carry on the party at home with more than six people or two households present.

He said that his officers will still be responding to neighbours calls and will visit any properties that are staging large house parties.

ACC Cooper told Nottinghamshire Live: "During the week we have seen a lot of pubs closing at 10pm. They are entitled to stay open later but they have chosen not to.

"People are not allowed to gather at the bar or have large gatherings or be on the dance floor like people used to.

"I think we have seen a quieter opening of the night-time economy.

"We will see more people than we are used to this weekend - and we will have more police than we have had in the last few months - but we won't have the hundreds of people in nightclubs that we usually have to police - that is not going to be this weekend.

"A lot of pubs are closing earlier than normal. Some will close at midnight and some will stay open and close when it becomes naturally quiet."

He said the majority of people had behaved "sensibly and responsibly" throughout the pandemic and bars and pubs had put in plenty of measures to keep people safe.

"This is not the full opening of the night-time economy or the ending of restrictions," he warned those who might think it is.

He said officers will be visiting venues, with an 'enhanced presence' in Nottinghamshire's towns and villages, not just the city centre.

Talking about house parties emerging once bars and pubs close, he said: "It is one of my concerns that I have got but it is not a big one.

"Is it likely to happen? Yes, it will. Will it happen a lot? No, it won't.

"It will be isolated pockets and we will respond when we need to. We don't want to be knocking on doors and using enforcement. We want everyone to enjoy the easing and enjoy it responsibly. "
