Nottingham pub quiz moves online – and attracts players from around the world

A Nottingham pub was determined that the enforced closure wasn’t going to put an end to its popular weekly quiz.

On Sunday, Trent Navigation’s brainteaser went ahead...online.

As a result around 250 players took part, with more than 3,500 viewers.

Quizmaster Simon Fothereringham sat alone in the pub, in Meadow Lane, broadcasting the questions via Facebook Live.

Simon told quizzers “It is a little bit weird, sat here on my own with a picture sheet. I was about to say we’re not going to mention coronavirus, unfortunately there’s a current affairs round coming up so it might get a mention.

“Let’s make a start, otherwise we’ll be here all night and I was just going to say you’ve got better things to do but obviously, unfortunately that’s not the case at the moment.”

Participants, who messaged their scores through at the end to create a virtual leader board, were loving it.

Jean Sabin Blacow said: “Few problems on my old laptop (that is my excuse) but loving this, thanks Simon.”

Tony White posted: “It’s been the highlight of my day!” while Darrell Harvey commented: “Show us a pint of Guinness so I can remember what one looks like.”

Tom Holodynsky, operations manager for Great Northern Group, said: “People watched, interacted and commented, playing from as far as New York, Detroit, Panama, Dubai, Amsterdam, Spain, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall plus other cities like Sheffield.

“People were playing from isolation, they created WhatsApp Groups/Messenger groups and played along in teams together - it truly brought everyone together!

“We posted the questions at half time and full time so people can play all week and we'll be doing it again next Sunday, more than likely from Simon's house.”

Tune in at 7pm next Sunday on the Trent Navigation's Facebook page.
