Nottingham pub closes after customer tests positive for Covid-19

A Nottingham pub acted quickly and closed its doors after a drinker tested positive for the coronavirus.

The New Engine House took the voluntary action after it was notified by the customer that they'd come down with the infection.

Landlady Eleanor Chesterton, who runs the pub with her husband Paul, said: "We closed for ten days for a deep clean. We have followed all the government guidelines to a tee. We were told we didn't have to close but we have a duty of care to our customers, family and friends, so we felt compelled to do so.

"We have put something on Facebook and notices at the pub to let customers know."

The customer had no symptoms while at the community pub, in Old Brickyard, Carlton Hill, but after displaying signs of Covid-19, they got tested the following day.

Mr and Mrs Chesterton have also had tests and both proved negative. All the staff have been informed and tested.

Mrs Chesterton said social distancing and hygiene measures were robust.

"We are confident the person concerned didn't catch it from our pub," she added.

The pub plans to welcome customers back again on Friday August 14.

It had reopened just over a month ago, on July 4 - the first day lockdown restrictions were lifted on pubs, restaurants and cafes.

Opening hours were changed on July 11. An announcement on the pub's Facebook page stated: "Due to a recent surge in drunken behaviour and abuse to our bar staff, we have been forced to reduce our opening hours.

"Government guidelines are there for a reason and are not being adhered to. This behaviour will not be tolerated in or outside our pub."

The New Engine House is the second Notts pub to shut over the last week after a case of coronavirus. The Chequers Inn, in Ranby, north Notts, is also temporarily closed after two members of staff tested positive.
