Nottingham primary school preparing ice pops so they can stay open during heatwave

A primary school in Nottingham has announced it will remain open during the incoming heatwave, and that they're getting ice pops ready to help their pupils beat the heat. The Met Office has issued a red weather warning for extreme heat for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, with temperatures expected to top 37C on Tuesday (July 19).

A red warning, meaning it is very likely the weather will have a high impact on people and infrastructure, is in place from midnight on Monday (July 18) through to 11.59pm on Tuesday, and is the highest warning that can be issued. But Mellers Primary in Radford, Nottingham has said they will remain open as "parents have to work to earn, so we will be open as usual".

In a Twitter post, the school said: "Good news: Mellers will remain open during Monday & Tuesday’s heatwave. We’ve thought about how to keep our students (& staff) cool; our parents have to work to earn, so we will be open as usual. Unless instructed to close, we remain open. Our job is to serve all our families!"

When Councillor Wendy Smith replied saying they are an amazing school and that she is proud to be an Associate Governor, the school tweeted: "We have ice pops ordered ready."

Other schools in Nottinghamshire have taken the decision to close for the two days of searing heat. Academies and schools including Bluecoat Wollaton, Aspley and Beechdale will remain shut on Monday, July 18 and Tuesday, July 19 as temperatures look set to near 40C.

Other schools within the Archway Learning Trustwhich will be closed such as Nottingham Emmanuel School in West Bridgford and the Long Eaton school. The trust has apologised for the inconvenience but says it has made the decision with the welfare of students and staff in mind.

The official government guidance via its 'The Education Hub' blog has alerted schools to the dangers the weather could pose to children. The blog states that children are more susceptible to high temperatures than adults and highlighted key points around keeping them safe, but the the government has not advised schools to close at all next week.
