Nottingham Playhouse calls off Janey Godley show after 'offensive' tweets about Asian and black people

Nottingham Playhouse has announced it has cancelled Janey Godley's show at the venue next year after historic 'offensive' tweets belonging to the comedian resurfaced.

The 60-year-old Scottish stand-up comedian has come under fire recently for tweets she posted around a decade ago that she herself has said "people have quite rightly found offensive" and "hurtful".

The comedian has since apologised for the comments after also being axed from adverts in a Scottish Covid-19 campaign.

Controversy flared after US website The Daily Beast highlighted tweets by Ms Godley dating back several years.

In the tweets largely directed at black and Asian people, Godley appeared to describe singer Kelly Rowland' a 'horse-faced black woman' and also called out an Asian man for not speaking English

The tweets mean Nottingham Playhouse has decided to stop the sale of tickets for Ms Godley's show at the venue which was scheduled for March 30, 2022.

A spokesperson for Nottingham Playhouse said: "“Nottingham Playhouse is aware of tweets made by Janey Godley that have recently been highlighted by the media. Nottingham Playhouse does not tolerate discrimination of any kind.

"We have taken the performance of Janey Godley’s Soup Pot Tour, originally scheduled for March 30, 2022, off sale while we raise our concerns with her tour management company.”

In one, she branded the former Destiny’s Child singer a “horsey faced black wummin” and in another claimed she spoke “like the stereotyped black Aunt Jemima who stands on a stool in the Tom & Jerry cartoons”, as reported by the Express.

In a third tweet, she said: “If Kelly talks like a ghetto blaster racist black chick am gonna punch her rice and peas.”

Another tweet from July 2009 reads: “Wish they would speak English I want to know what the fat baldy Asian man has done to anger three Asian women, they are pointing & screaming.”

A follow-up tweet, sent a minute later, said: “Ok, fat Asian man walked away and one lovely older woman in pink sari just threw her bag at him, SPEAK ENGLISH please? I want to know.”

In a statement released last week, Janey Godley said: ‘These historic tweets that people have quite rightly found offensive, are deeply hurtful and shows my lack of empathy and zero self-awareness and come from a time of ignorance in my life, I am a firm believer in progress not perfection, I will continue to progress.

"People have every right to see who they are supporting and what values they hold and looking through their past social media is the way forward. I apologise for every single offensive word I wrote.

"The offensive replies from me, were to accounts that threatened me and I lashed out with abhorrent heckles. Their accounts were suspended, I should have blocked and reported them and not argued back.

"Comedy is no excuse for shocking and hurting people with words."

Ms Godley, 60, was paid a reported £12,000 for a series of TV adverts promoting the Scottish Government's Covid-19 health campaign.

She was axed after the posts came to light, and subsequently apologised for her “offensive, hurtful language".

It has also recently come to light that the Scottish Government was warned about race row comic Janey Godley’s tweets had caused months before hiring her for the Covid advertisements.

The comedian recently entered the spotlight due to her dubbed pastiches of First Minister Nicola Sturgeon's coronavirus news briefings in recent months.
