Nottingham parks reopen after 'extremely disappointing' scenes of boozy revellers

Two of Nottingham's popular beauty spots have been reopened after they were locked up amid chaotic scenes from boozy revellers partying during the warm weather.

Nottingham City Council closed both the Arboretum and Lenton Recreation Ground on March 31 following scenes of huge parties at both locations.

Litter was left strewn across the grass and bins overflowed with beer bottles, prompting outcry from those who use the parks in a respectable manner.

Perhaps as a result of the parks being closed, many people headed to the Forest Recreation Ground on the evening of Wednesday, March 31, where a 200-strong party took place in the dark of night.

This again prompted a huge clean-up operation from the council, just 24 hours after they had done the same.

Today (April 1), however, the parks have been reopened.

The chairwoman of the Lenton Drive and Neighbours Residents' Association, Kate Loewenthal, said: "I just can't believe the total disrespect and disregard for anyone but themselves.

"It is nice to have the rec open again but even nicer that it's clean and peaceful.

"I hope there is some serious planning in place for when the weather improves again."

Nottingham City Council leader, councillor David Mellen, has urged people to "behave reasonably" over the Easter weekend.

He said: "The scenes we have witnessed at some of our parks this week are extremely disappointing.

"A thoughtless minority have spoilt things for many other people who want to enjoy the parks now that restrictions have started to ease.

"It’s not acceptable for police officers, community protection officers and cleansing crews to be diverted from other important duties, simply because some people seem incapable of using our parks appropriately.

"We regretfully felt the need to close two parks yesterday but these are open again today.

"I thank the vast majority of our residents who I know will continue to behave reasonably and thoughtfully as we go into the Easter Weekend and implore others to do the same, for the sake of themselves and those around them, our thinly stretched frontline workers and the families of those who have lost their lives to Covid."
