Alex Norris will continue as Nottingham North’s MP, but his majority over the Conservatives has been shrunk considerably.
The seat had been a Labour stronghold since it was won in 1987.
However Mr Norris’ total votes decreased from 23,067 to 17,337.
Meanwhile the Conservatives, who came in second place, gained votes, going from 11,907 to 12,847.
The Brexit Party came in third place, with 2,686.
The Liberal Democrats were in fourth, more than doubling their 2017 vote, from 674 to 1,582.
The Green Party came last, but also increased their vote, from 538 to 868.
In his acceptance speech shortly after 2.30am at Nottingham Tennis Centre, Mr Norris said: “On a personal note, and I think I said this two and a half years ago.
“My wife will never hear this, she’s still working and she’ll be working until 9 o’clock this morning in our shared passion for social justice, so I tell her this knowing she’ll not hear this, but Emma, I love you dearly.
“It is critical, and we are clearly learning this tonight, it is critical that we listen to the electorate, that we reflect with humility when we are sent a message, and we reflect on the future from there.
"That is the spirit that I will be going into Parliament with, and I am so proud to be our community’s voice.”
