Nottingham New Year's Eve fireworks cancelled due to 'financial consideration'

Nottingham's New Year's Eve firework celebration won't be taking place for a second year running.

Previously a spectacular firework display has been held at 12midnight to ring in the New Year.

When Nottingham Castle closed for renovations the display switched to Old Market Square in 2019.

However, last year the heart of the city was eerily quiet with no street parties, music or fireworks since the city was under Tier 4 restrictions.

Now, Nottingham City Council has announced that there will be no firework celebration on December 31 to see in 2022 due to financial reasons.

Councillor Eunice Campbell-Clark, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Schools at the authority, said: “As part of last year’s budget proposals it was agreed that the council would have to stop hosting one of three annual events – Bonfire Night, Light Night or the New Year’s Eve fireworks.

"This was a financial consideration and not related to the pandemic.

“The decision was taken to cancel the fireworks. This didn’t happen last year and won’t be in 2021, however, we will keep the situation under review for future."
