Nottingham MPs issue 'solidarity' statement ahead of city's Black Lives Matter protest

Three Nottingham MPs say they will be using their privileged voices in parliament to "amplify voices for change" as thousands take to the streets for the Black Lives Matter protests across the UK.

A protest will take place in the Forest Recreation Ground from 12noon-2pm today (June 7), and comes comes as a stand against racism and rife discrimination members of non-white communities face across the world today.

The death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, triggered protests which are now beginning to span the rest of America, the UK and Europe.

Nottingham north MP Alex Norris, as well as Nottingham south MP Lilian Greenwood and Nottingham east MP Nadia Whittome issued a joint statement ahead of the protest in the city.

They said: "We stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter protesters.

"The killing of George Floyd and the brutality towards peaceful protesters has highlighted structural racism, injustice and inequality affecting black people across the world.

"We will use our privileged places in parliament to amplify voices for systemic change."

Organisers say the protest will be peaceful, while Nottingham City Council says it also stands in solidarity with those who attend.

Nottinghamshire Police will be in attendance, after raising concerns about social distancing as the country continues to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic.
