Nottingham MP Lilian Greenwood made Deputy Chief Whip in Labour reshuffle

A Nottingham MP has been given an important new role in the Labour Party as she joins the Whips Office.

Lilian Greenwood, MP for Nottingham South, has been appointed Deputy Chief Whip for Legislation after Keir Starmer made appointments to his frontbench team on May 14.

In a tweet, Ms Greenwood said: "Absolutely delighted to be returning to the Whips Office."

Labour Whips also tweeted: "Congrats to @LilianGreenwood and @SarahOwen_ on joining the best team in Parliament."

The MP has represented Nottingham South since the 2010 General Election.

Her appointment comes after Labour leader Starmer reshuffled his front bench last week following disappointing local election results.

Whips are MPs, or members of the House of Lords, who help to organise their party's contribution to parliamentary business.

One of their main jobs is to make sure members vote the way their party wants so they can pass specific bills or laws through Parliament.

The chief whip for the Conservatives, who oversees the whipping system, is Sherwood MP Mark Spencer.
