Nottingham MP 'concerned for safety of constituents' living near collapsing wall in Sneinton

A Nottingham MP has written an open letter raising concerns for the safety of constituents living near to a wall that has collapsed three times in a year.

Labour MP for Nottingham East Nadia Whittome penned the letter to Nottingham City Council leader, David Mellen, regarding the wall collapses affecting Spalding Road and Windmill Lane residents in Sneinton.

She has asked whether the council will consider reviewing 'unsafe structures'.

It comes after emergency services evacuated five families from four separate properties in the area on February 3.

A landslide caused the collapse of a 70ft brick wall to tumble into people's gardens and homes.

Nottinghamshire Police said no-one was injured but some homes were left severely damaged.

Recently, a resident spoke up about a separate incident regarding another patch of connecting wall also collapsing - a year on from a similar occurrence.

Pictures and video footage from resident Tnaya-Rue Ball shows a dangerous drop from Windmill Lane down to Spalding Road has been revealed from the collapse.

She said: "It's lucky that no one has been hurt but it's only a matter of time."

Ms Whittome has now asked for clarity on the situation and to find out how many other areas are being looked at, and if a review will be conducted into unsafe structures.

After firstly thanking the council leader for the work so far to resolve the problem, the letter read: "I was concerned to hear this morning (February 16) reports of further incidents relating to other sections of the wall collapsing.

"I would like to update my constituents who live in the area on what is happening and would also be grateful if you could inform me how many enforcement cases are currently under way on unsafe structures and whether the council will conduct a systemic review of unsafe structures in the area.

"Given the seriousness of what occurred recently, I am concerned for the safety of my constituents, especially considering that this is the second incident in the same area, and would like to seek assurances that Nottingham City Council is proactively investigating this."

A City Council spokesperson said: “Boundary and retaining walls are generally the responsibility of property owners and we believe this to be the case here. Nevertheless, our structural engineers have attended the site to assess the situation, as councils have the powers to carry out work which ensures people’s safety, with the ability to recover costs.

“There has been a collapse of a different section of wall further along the road to the incident earlier this month. Residents were advised not to enter the affected gardens, which have been fenced off, and no damage has been caused to properties, so no evacuation was necessary.

"We will continue to help residents with the clear-up operation and establish what the next steps are, in consultation with local councillors who have been in touch with residents."
