Nottingham man dies after being caught in avalanche in French Alps

An inquest has been held into the death of a man who got caught in an avalanche when he went off-piste during a skiing trip to France.

Stephen Williams heard was on a skiing holiday to Vallorcine in the Chamonix region with friends and family when the tragic incident took place.

The hearing at Swansea Civic Centre on Monday, August 18, was told how Mr Williams, of Selby Road in West Bridgford, caught a ski lift up to the top of the mountain intending to ski 'off-piste', meaning away from prepared ski runs. Wales online reports.

He and the party he was with were experienced skiers and had the necessary safety equipment with them in order to ski off-piste.

There was an avalanche warning of level three in place which meant there was a moderate risk of danger.

He and his friends were descending the section of the mountain, and were spaced out, but found themselves in a red area.

An avalanche took place and although Mr Williams was wearing an avalanche airbag backpack it failed to work.

The 56-year-old, who was born in Glanamman, Wales, was later discovered face-down in the snow on March 4, 2018.

The cause of his death was given as multiple injuries caused by the fall.

Assistant coroner Aled Wyn Gruffydd recorded a conclusion of accidental death.
