Nottingham leisure and social club to close for good after 46 years

A Nottingham leisure and social club is set to close its doors after 46 years in the city.

City Hospital Leisure Centre is operated by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and located on the Nottingham City Hospital campus on Hucknall Road.

It first opened in 1974 and has acted as a leisure centre and social club for visitors.

The centre will now be shut after a unanimous decision by its committee, who say the business is no longer sustainable due to the coronavirus pandemic and a lack of funding.

Jeff Cokkinos, Chairman of the club's committee, said: "We are saddened to announce the closure of City Hospital Leisure Centre on the 1 November, following a unanimous decision from the committee.

"Due to the effect of coronavirus on the trade and the difficulty in securing funding, the business is no longer sustainable enough to continue.

"We would like to thank all our members and regular attendees for their ongoing support of the club."

The centre was used as venue for live performances and had a bar onsite which served drinks to its customers.

It was open to staff at City Hospital as well as members of the public.

Danny Hewis, the deputy CEO of nearby charity Nottingham Mencap, said: "I wasn't aware that it was closing.

"It's a shame when a leisure club closes down, especially in times like these when they are so important."

Another man, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "They have tried so hard to keep it going - but it will close when the furloughs end.

"Lots of hospital staff use it - it's a real shame."
