Nottingham has one of the easiest accents for Alexa to understand

We’ve all been there. Asked Alexa to play a song just for her to tell us the weather, or find Google is talking to us after it’s misheard something we’ve said to our friends.

And don't even go there with 'ay up mi duck' or ''aya masht?'

However, it turns out the Nottingham accent is one of the easiest for smart devices to understand.

According to new research AI assistants struggle to under more nearly a quarter of UK accents.

The electronic gadgets, with voice command features allowing us to do everything from checking the weather to turning off the lights, are now estimated to be in more than 5.8m homes across the UK.

The comparison and switching service Uswitch.com analysed 30 accents from cities across the UK by recording them asking their smart devices ten common questions.

Each city was then given a score out of 10 for voice clarity - the higher the score meaning the more errors were encountered.

Nottingham was found to be the seventh easiest accent for smart devices to understand, with 90 percent of commands understood by voice assistants in the experiment.

The clearest accent came from people living in London, while Alexa struggled most with Cardiff, Glaswegian and Liverpudlian accents.

Nick Baker, broadband expert at Uswitch.com, said "Smart speakers are becoming an integral part of many modern-day homes. While most of us find them useful it's clear that more needs to be done to make voice recognition features smoother.

"The use of artificial intelligence in products is only going to increase, and as it grows in popularity it's important that features are accessible to all. The more we use virtual assistants the better they will get at understanding us. Some brands are already taking steps to allow assistants to learn about our accents which should avoid alienating customers and improve user experience."
