Nottingham Forest youngster completes transfer as he takes 'next step' in development

Nottingham Forest youngster Josh Barnes has taken “the next step” in his progression by heading out on loan.

The Under-23s midfielder will link up with National League South outfit Truro City for a month, following in the footsteps of Reds teammates Will Swan, Kieran Hayes and George Shelvey, who have all had spells with the White Tigers.

Barnes was involved with Chris Hughton’s first team during pre-season and recently put pen to paper on a new contract at the City Ground.

"I'm buzzing to have signed an extended contract and I've been here since I was eight years old so it's another step forward for me," the 20-year-old told the club website.

"I've managed to work my way through the age groups and had a taste of the first-team in pre-season which was a great experience.

"The interest from Truro has been there for a while now but covid put a dent in that, so it's great to get that sorted as it'll be good for my development.

"I had a taste of playing with Truro a couple of times in pre-season and the lads were really welcoming, so I'm excited to go there and get more minutes under my belt."

Barnes’ move comes after a trial period with Truro, when he featured in friendlies against Torquay United and Exeter City.

"Josh is somebody who's been in our system for a long time and he's progressed nicely through the Academy," said Under-23s boss Andy Reid.

"The time is right for him to go out on loan and this is the next step for his progression. We've got a great link with Truro and we've sent the likes of Will Swan there before who had a great spell.

"It'll be a great experience for him and one that he'll come back in better shape from.

"We feel that Josh getting first team football in a men’s league week in, week out will only benefit him further and we look forward to seeing how he progresses."
