Nottingham Forest youngster Brennan Johnson rewarded for top performances

Nottingham Forest youngster Brennan Johnson has been named the EFL's young player of the month for September.

The talented 20-year-old has been in red-hot form this season with a number of impressive displays in the Garibaldi.

He was involved heavily in Forest picking up their first three points of the season at the start of the month, grabbing an assist as the Reds won 2-0 away to Huddersfield Town.

And his month concluded with a superb performance against Barnsley, contributing an assist before scoring to put his side ahead, as the Reds came from behind to win at Oakwell.

On the award, Brennan said: "It's a really good feeling and I'm proud to be given this award.

"It shows the hard work that all of the squad have been putting in and that's really helped me to perform well.

"I've been able to express myself and play a lot of football so far this season and I'm really enjoying it here.

"I want to continue helping the team with more goals and assists and now we're focussed on getting a positive result against Blackpool."

Johnson attracted interest from elsewhere in the summer, following sparkling performances on loan at Lincoln City, with Brentford being rebuffed in their attempts to lure him away.

Discussions have taken place over fresh terms for Johnson, as his current deal expires in 2023. And the youngster gave the impression of being relaxed about the situation ahead of the visit of Blackpool today (October 16).

“I’ve been really happy here so far. I’ve been here since the age of eight,” he told NottinghamshireLive.

“Playing for Forest has always been my dream, so it’s been really nice to play for them.

“It would be nice to stay here. But at the minute, I’m just focusing on the next game, because it has been a tough start to the season - everyone knows that.

“If we keep winning games, I think the rest will sort itself out.

“At times it is nice to hear (about other interest), but I was just focused on coming back to Forest in the summer.

“I didn’t have that long off because of the play-offs, so I didn’t really have much time to think about what was happening because I was back at Forest before I knew it.

“I think that kind of helped, coming back in quite quickly, just getting back into the swing of things in pre-season with Forest.”
