Nottingham Forest XI v Reading predicted as Mighten and Lolley miss out

Nottingham Forest make the trip to Reading this weekend as they return to action after the international break.

Steve Cooper’s side will hope to pick up from where they left off, having toppled Preston North End 3-0 with a fine performance at the City Ground last time out.

But the Reds head coach might be tempted to make a few changes to the XI which lined up against the Lilywhites - including to his formation.

He went with a four-man defence on that occasion, swapping his usual 3-4-3 system for a 4-2-3-1 which allowed for an extra attacker to come into the line-up.

Forest have shown their flexibility under Cooper with an ability to tweak their shape both for and during matches.

And while four at the back worked well on the banks of the Trent, it may be a three-man back line returns against the Royals.

It was hoped Loic Mbe Soh would be closer to being involved after the fortnight’s hiatus, having been sidelined with injury since September. The 20-year-old has yet to feature under the new boss, though will likely get some minutes for the Under-23s before he is back in contention for the first-team.

Tobias Figueiredo would, therefore, be the man to come back into the side if Cooper does revert to his favoured formation.

And if he does get the nod, his inclusion could see youngster Alex Mighten drop to the bench.

The academy graduate was handed a rare start against Preston after some lively substitute performances, but found it tough to make a real impact on the game.

There is a fair bit of competition for places in the attacking three, with Joe Lolley also in contention and sure to have been eager to impress on the training pitch in the past two weeks.

Philip Zinckernagel and Brennan Johnson - who is currently on duty with Wales - joined Mighten in support of striker Lewis Grabban in the last fixture, but Cooper could opt to mix things up at the Madejski Stadium.

Predicted Forest XI: Samba; Worrall, Figueiredo, McKenna; Spence, Yates, Colback, Lowe; Zinckernagel, Grabban, Johnson.
