Nottingham Forest Women hoping for another 'special' City Ground crowd against Derby County

Nottingham Forest Women are hoping for another bumper attendance at the City Ground when they host arch-rivals Derby County Women.

Last season, 4,443 fans watched the Reds take on the Rams on Trentside - a new record in the third tier. And with this term’s edition of the National League Northern Premier Division clash also being staged at the stadium, Andy Cook’s side are “excited” at the prospect of supporters turning out in force again for the crunch fixture.

Forest, who usually play their home fixtures at Eastwood Community’s ground, have made a fine start to the campaign, notching three wins from their first four league games. And they will be aiming to keep that form going in the East Midlands derby on Sunday, October 16 (2pm kick-off).

“It’s a great opportunity for our Women’s team to play a significant fixture at the City Ground and we’re all excited by the prospect,” Reds chairman Nicholas Randall QC told the club’s official website. “We saw last season how much appetite there is for women’s football in our community, and we were extremely proud to break the league’s attendance record as well as host Women’s Super League side Manchester City in the FA Cup. Andy Cook and his staff work incredibly hard and have started the season in great form so it would be fantastic to see as many supporters in attendance as possible.”

The Reds currently sit third in the league table, with head coach Cook having previously spoken about falling short of promotion last season being a motivating factor for 2022/23. His team also secured progress in the FA Women’s National League Cup last time out, thumping Leek Town 5-0.

“We’re really excited to be coming back to the City Ground, especially for a game of this magnitude against our biggest rivals,” Cook said. “The support has been fantastic for the team since I’ve been here and to break the record last season for the highest ever attendance in our division was superb, and it would be special to improve on that even further.

“We saw how much the nation got behind the Lionesses at the Euros this summer and it was a great advert for women’s football. We’d love to see as many supporters at the City Ground as possible because it really does make the difference and all the players really do appreciate all the support you give them. We’ve started the season really strongly and we’re looking to build on that, so to have a massive league game at the City Ground to look forward to gives us even more motivation to keep striving forward and improving.”
