Nottingham Forest 'will not activate 20m euros option' on Portuguese youngster

Winger Diogo Goncalves’ future is reportedly uncertain, following the end of his loan spell at Nottingham Forest.

The Portuguese youngster struggled to make an impact for the Reds during his season-long loan from Benfica.

He made 10 appearances in total, including just one start in the Championship, and failed to find the back of the net.

Asmir Begovic 'frustrated' with life at Bournemouth amid Nottingham Forest's reported interest

He featured only three times since Martin O’Neill took charge in January, with his last runout coming on March 13, when he came off the bench in the 3-1 defeat at home to Aston Villa.

Forest are understood to have had an option to turn Goncalves’ move into a permanent one this summer, but it seems unlikely they will take that up.

The 22-year-old was one of the seven loan players listed as returning to their parent sides, according to the Reds’ retained list released earlier this week – and it is understood Sam Byram and Jack Colback are the two the club would be keen to bring back.

Reports in Portugal also suggest Goncalves will not be returning to the City Ground for the new Championship campaign, claiming Forest will not activate a 20m euros purchase option.

And they speculate he might also not be part of Benfica’s plans, saying his fate will be decided this summer.
