Nottingham Forest vs Manchester United LIVE: Premier League result, latest updates and reaction after Amad volley cancels out Forest fightback

Sweet strike: Amad Diallo levels for Manchester United with a volley - (Getty Images)

Nottingham Forest vs Manchester United LIVE!

Unable to extend their recent Premier League winning streak, Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils settled for a point at the City Ground as a sublime volley from Amad Diallo cancelled out a second half fightback from Forest. United looked to be on course for a fourth straight victory when they took the lead just after the half hour mark, as Casemiro headed home Bruno Fernandes’s delivery from a corner that the hosts argued should never have been awarded.

Having gone into the break a goal down, Forest scored twice in as many minutes through Morgan Gibbs-White and Nicolo Savona to turn the tie on its head soon after the restart. Amad’s fine left-footed effort from the edge of the box - after Forest failed to properly clear a corner nine minutes from time - levelled the scores again, before a goal-line clearance by Murillo in the closing stages ensured Sean Dyche’s side also came away with a first point since September. Relive all the action in our live blog below!

Report: Amad volley rescues draw after Forest fightback

18:48 , Alex Dakers

Amad Diallo’s delightful volley stopped Ruben Amorim’s first anniversary as Manchester United manager from ending in defeat and extended Nottingham Forest’s wait for a second Premier League win of the season.

Saturday’s trip to the City Ground landed a year to the day since the Portuguese was named as Erik ten Hag’s successor and came during the best spell of his topsy-turvy tenure.

United arrived on a run of three straight wins and Diallo’s late volley maintained their unbeaten record, securing a 2-2 draw as Sean Dyche’s Forest were denied a comeback win.

It was probably a fair result at the end of a helter-skelter encounter that the Red Devils went ahead in, with the City Ground faithful raging at the decision to award the corner from which Casemiro headed home.

Nicolo Savona was adjudged to have taken the ball out of play and looked like he would have the last laugh, coolly scoring in the 50th minute just two minutes after Morgan Gibbs-White had equalised.

United pushed for a leveller that Diallo eventually found in style, with the Ivory Coast international then denied a stoppage-time winner by Murillo’s goal-line intervention.

We’re underway at the City Ground!

A first home Premier League game in charge of Nottingham Forest for Sean Dyche.

A chance to win four straight for Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United, who get the ball rolling.

The two managers had a bit of back and forth in the lead up to this afternoon’s fixture, but look chummy enough on the touchline.

We’ll have both squads out on the pitch in a few moments.

10 to go until kick-off

14:50 , Alex Dakers

Just 10 minutes until our scheduled kick-off time at the City Ground now.

This is one of five 3pm fixtures across the Premier League today, with table toppers Arsenal also in action before a couple of evening games.

United could, for the time being, go second in the division with another three points here. A victory would also be huge for Forest, as it would help them edge closer to an escape from the relegation zone.

Amorim: 'We are confident, but must forget the past three weeks'

14:50 , Alex Dakers

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim says his team and the club’s fans are growing increasingly confident thanks to their recent good form.

But, the Portuguese insists it is important not to get caught up in their past victories as they must “do it all over again” by facing a “tough opponent” in Forest and a manager in Sean Dyche who is capable of having a “huge impact” at his new club.

Finishing the warm-ups

In-form Mbeumo

14:42 , Alex Dakers

Bryan Mbeumo is in fine form for Manchester United, having scored twice in last weekend’s win over Brighton to add to his opening goal in the Red Devils’ victory at Anfield before that.

He’s got four goals and an assist in total in the Premier League this season, and will fancy his chances of adding to those tallies today against a Nottingham Forest side that are still seeking their first clean sheet of the campaign.

Less than 30 minutes until kick-off!

14:37 , Alex Dakers

A little under half an hour to go until we get underway at the City Ground.

In a few hours’ time, will we have had a first win of the Sean Dyche era for Nottingham Forest, four in a row for Ruben Amorim's Manchester United in the Premier League, or a stalemate?

Last five fixtures

Here’s a glance at each side’s last five fixtures (latest first), for some context of their recent form:

The visitors arriving

14:22 , Alex Dakers

United, meanwhile, arrived at the City Ground earlier in good spirits given they’ve just won three straight Premier League matches for the first time in Ruben Amorim’s year-long tenure.

Can the Red Devils make it four in a row today, and snap their recent winless run against Forest in the process?

Forest in the building

14:17 , Alex Dakers

The hosts are in the building.

Forest put on a promising performance in Sean Dyche’s first match in charge, a 2-0 win over Porto in the Europa League, but Bournemouth beat them by the same margin in the Premier League last weekend.

Can the Tricky Trees secure a first league victory since the opening match of the season?

No changes from Dyche or Amorim

13:59 , Alex Dakers

Sean Dyche and Ruben Amorim have both elected to field the exact same starting XIs as last weekend.

Nottingham Forest lost at Bournemouth last Sunday but ongoing injuries to a few key players including Chris Wood and Ola Aina means Dyche keeps faith with the same group.

Igor Jesus starts up top in Wood’s absence, Nicolo Savona joins Neco Williams in the full-back positions, and the chosen wingers are again Dan Ndoye and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

As for Manchester United, Harry Maguire is fit enough to return to the bench after missing last Saturday’s home victory over Brighton with a knock. Amorim is evidently otherwise happy with his side’s recent performances, with the Red Devils having won three in a row.

This, notably, is the first time in his year at the helm that the Portuguese has named an unchanged XI in the Premier League.

United’s new-look attacking trio over Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko ran riot last time out - will they do so again today?

TEAM NEWS: Forest starting XI

The team news is in!

First, today’s hosts Nottingham Forest:

Dyche thanks Forest supporters

13:44 , Alex Dakers

Sean Dyche has thanked Forest’s supporters for their backing as the Tricky Trees look for what would be just their second Premier League victory of the season, and their first under the new boss.

Writing in his programme notes, Dyche said: “The atmosphere in our last home game was truly special, and we can only thank you for that.

“To have the City Ground bursting with noise as it was only shows how special our club is and underlines how lucky we are to have you backing us every week, no matter the occasion or opponent.”

United's 'clear plan' ahead of January transfer window

13:34 , Alex Dakers

In the meantime, here’s a look at what United’s director of football Jason Wilcox had to say recently about the club’s transfer plans...

According to Wilcox, the Red Devils have a “clear plan” when it comes to further transfers with more investment in new signings to come.

While much of Amorim’s eventful 12-month reign thus far has been hugely disappointing, with United finishing 15th in the Premier League last season and losing the Europa League final before making a poor start to the current campaign, United finally appear to be on the rise after breaking into the top six with three successive wins over Sunderland, Liverpool and Brighton.

Such a run has seen many of their high-profile summer signings impress, with Bryan Mbeumo having been arguably United’s best player so far this term, while fellow attacking recruits Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha have also been on the scoresheet of late to add to a series of commanding performances from new first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

And the club have revealed that more quality reinforcements may be on the way in the New Year.

"We have got a clear plan," Wilcox said in a recent interview with United’s in-house media channels. "We know what we have got to do, we know the areas of the team that we have got to improve.

He added: “It is not always about just signing elite talent, they have got to have the right character and be somebody who can bring something different to the team.”

Amorim's first year in the job

13:12 , Alex Dakers

Today, 1 November, marks a year to the day since Ruben Amorim was appointed as Manchester United’s head coach.

It has been far from plain sailing for the Portuguese since his arrival at Old Trafford, but things may finally be starting to click as he heads into his 53rd match in charge.

Speaking to the club ahead of today’s game, Amorim said: “During my career as a manager, most of the time I was winning.

“When you are winning, you can say that you have convictions and you are loyal to your ideas, but you learn when you lose, when you are under pressure and I learned that when I’m under pressure, I’m stronger on my ideas and I keep with my ideas.

“Of course, it’s really important to feel the support of everyone in the club, especially the fans that help you, to give you that confidence to continue on your path, but that was the biggest learning point: when I’m under pressure, I can stick with my plan.”

Amorim responds to Dyche's 4-4-2 comments on United

13:06 , Alex Dakers

In the lead up to this afternoon’s match, Ruben Amorim has laughed off Sean Dyche’s claim that he could improve on Manchester United’s record by playing a 4-4-2 formation.

Amorim’s United will visit Dyche’s Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon, and the Portuguese will have his English counterpart’s dig fresh in the memory.

"I may get hammered for it,” said Dyche on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast in August. “But I bet I could win more games with that squad playing a 4-4-2.”

Amorim saw the funny side of the comment, brushing it off before reaffirming his commitment to his preferred 3-4-2-1 system.

“Maybe it's true, if we play in a 4-4-2 we win more games,” he chuckled. “I always say I have a way of playing that is going to take a while, and then in the future it is going to be better, so we don’t know that.

“I can look at Sean Dyche as a manager, then as a pundit. If you are a pundit and you don’t say very strong things, I don’t want to watch you.

Amorim added: “I am the same, so I can understand that it is a completely different job. I know that Sean Dyche is really smart and he knows how to play the game.

“And he also understands that one thing is when we are seeing the game and talking about the game, another thing is to coach the game. So I understand that. I have nothing to say. I just want to win the next one.”

Standard Sport prediction

There is an undeniable good feeling around United at the moment.

Last week’s win over Brighton was arguably their biggest result of the season so far, with three of the four goals coming from summer signings.

As things start to click for the Red Devils and Dyche remains in the early days of his tenure at the City Ground, there is little evidence to suggest the visitors cannot get the job done.

Manchester United to win, 3-1.

Man Utd early team news: Maguire doubt, Martinez not ready

12:46 , Alex Dakers

Harry Maguire missed Man United’s win over Brighton with a knock, and he does not seem to be ready to face Forest, either. Asked for an update on his condition pre-match, Amorim said: “I don’t know about Harry Maguire. The rest are fit.”

With that said, today’s outing will come too soon for Lisandro Martinez, who is back in full team training after tearing his ACL in February but remains unready to return to competitive play.

Matheus Cunha - who has a remarkable record against Forest, scoring three times in four appearances - will be hopeful of keeping his place in United’s attack, having netted his first goal for the club last weekend.

Nottingham Forest early team news: Wood and Aina among absentees

12:39 , Alex Dakers

Forest will definitely be without five first-team stars including Ola Aina, Chris Wood and on-loan Arsenal defender Oleksandr Zinchenko for United’s visit to the Midlands.

Wood, who scored in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford last season and was his side’s chief goal threat throughout 2024-25, has been struggling with a knee problem sustained while on international duty with New Zealand earlier in the month.

Dyche has also confirmed Angus Gunn and Dilane Bakwa are absent through injury.
