Nottingham Forest vs Chelsea - LIVE!
Chelsea booked their return to the Champions League with a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest, who fell heartbreakingly short in their own quest for the promised land.
Levi Colwill's goal early in the second half decided what was effectively a Premier League top-five shoot-out at the City Ground, meaning the Blues will be back in the top tier of European football again after two seasons away. They could complete a historic season in Enzo Maresca's first year in charge if they can beat Real Betis in Wednesday's Europa Conference League final, where they are aiming to become the first team to win all three UEFA competitions.
Forest had to win and hope other results went their way to get into the Champions League in just their third season back in the Premier League. Despite Newcastle and Aston Villa losing, they could not look after their own business and will play in the third-tier Europa Conference League next season.

FT: Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
18:02 , Matt VerriChelsea are back in the Champions League!
Not particularly pretty, but they will not care one bit.
For Forest, it’s the Conference League.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
18:00 , Matt Verri90+7 mins: Anderson smashes the ball across the face of goal, Sanchez parries it.
Looks set to fall for Jota, but Dewsbury-Hall throws himself in the way to clear.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:59 , Matt Verri90+6 mins: Long throw from Forest... too long.
Sanchez claims and topples over, that will be another 30 seconds taken care of.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:57 , Matt Verri90+4 mins: Well that was the chance!
Sels in the Chelsea half as he brings the ball forward, and lumps it long into the box.
It falls perfectly for Wood in the box, but his first touch isn’t great and he then fires over on the stretch.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:55 , Matt Verri90+2 mins: Not sure Forest would get back into this with eight hours added on.
Chelsea ticking away the seconds very comfortably.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:53 , Matt Verri90 mins: Chelsea content to keep it in the corner, and Palmer is having some words with the Forest fans at the same time.
EIGHT minutes added on!
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:51 , Matt Verri88 mins: About five shots in as many seconds as Chelsea bodies throw themselves in front of the ball.
Eventually Wood can only cushion a volley straight into Sanchez’s grateful arms.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:50 , Matt Verri87 mins: Gibbs-White does really well to pressure James and win a corner.
A Forest goal here and we’ve go a serious finish on our hands.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:48 , Matt Verri85 mins: Chelsea players working so hard. Maresca clapping them as Fernandez and Gusto charge back to close down Hudson-Odoi.
The Blues are very nearly there...
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:45 , Matt Verri82 mins: Aina basically can’t move on that right wing, though that does seem to mainly be an issue when he has to get back.
Nuno has spotted that too. Jota on in his place.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:42 , Matt Verri79 mins: Caicedo goes down, Cucurella goes down... eventually Chelsea get the decision.
Forest furious and half the team surround the referee, who waves the yellow card in all directions.
Malik Ouzia at the City Ground
17:40 , Matt VerriIt would take swings in three different games for things to go against Chelsea now but Maresca is still taking no chances with his substitutions.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:40 , Matt Verri77 mins: Aina gets in behind, but his legs then basically give up.
Blasts the cross high over everyone and straight out of play.
Here’s another Chelsea change - Gusto on for Neto.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:38 , Matt Verri75 mins: Colwill stunned as the referee blows for a foul on Gibbs-White.
Forest man went down holding his back... not a huge amount of contact, but he gets what he wanted.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:35 , Matt Verri72 mins: Chelsea knocking it around at walking pace in defence.
Forest not really going all out to press yet... that has to change at some point.
And some point soon, you’d think.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:33 , Matt Verri70 mins: Forest fans already fed up with Sanchez’s time-wasting. Dare say a booking won’t be far away if Chelsea stay in front.
Palmer playing up front for the visitors now, with Neto and Madueke either side of the midfield three.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:30 , Matt Verri67 mins: Couple of minutes delay here, after Madueke absolutely clatters into Dominguez.
Both need treatment and Dominguez has to be helped from the pitch. Yates on to replace him.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:28 , Matt Verri65 mins: Everton have taken the lead against Newcastle.
If, and it’s a big if right now, Forest can win this match, they will qualify for the Champions League.
Still plenty of time.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:25 , Matt Verri62 mins: Ball bobbles around in the Chelsea box from a corner, visitors don’t particularly deal with it well.
Comes out to Aina, who decides to back himself with a first-time effort on his weaker foot from 30 yards out.
No further comment.
Malik Ouzia at the City Ground
17:24 , Matt VerriHmm. Lavia on to shore things up in place of Sancho, but that feels a little early for a move so conservative?
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:22 , Matt Verri59 mins: Forest corner, noise levels go up again.
Swung in right on top of Sanchez, who takes it well under pressure. He’s in no rush to let go of the ball, either.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:19 , Matt Verri57 mins: Caicedo into the book for a fairly cynical foul in midfield.
First Forest change of the afternoon. Hudson-Odoi on against his former club, replacing Sangare.
Handbrake very much off.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:17 , Matt Verri54 mins: Another Chelsea corner coming up, they’ve been so much better since half-time.
Taken short, Neto stands up a cross and Tosin is briefly interested, but it’s over his head.
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea
17:15 , Matt Verri52 mins: From a neutral perspective, that should really open things up.
Forest have no choice to go for it now, they’ve got nothing to lose.
Strap in...
Malik Ouzia at the City Ground
17:14 , Matt VerriFine, fine margins. Nico Williams misjudges the flight of the ball just a fraction and he can’t get enough on the clearing header.
It’s a huge goal for Chelsea. Credit Neto for his awareness in poking the ball across goal.
GOAL! Nottingham Forest 0-1 Chelsea | Levi Colwill 50'
17:12 , Matt VerriBetter from Chelsea at the start of this half, as Palmer’s cross is turned behind for a corner.
And now they lead! HUGE goal.
Forest don’t deal with the corner, Neto is in and he squares it for Colwill to finish into an empty net.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
17:1048 mins: Sancho tries to play in Cucurella, but Sels can come off his line to claim.
Six goals across ten Premier League matches so far on the final day.
Not exactly thrilling stuff...
Back underway!
17:08 , Matt VerriWe are now up and running!
We’ve got a bit of a delay at the City Ground.
Premier League want kick-off in the matches relevant to the top-five at the same time.
As Villa had Martinez sent off at Old Trafford and the first-half ran on longer, we’ve got to wait.
Around the grounds...
16:56 , Matt VerriNottingham Forest have to go for it at some point.
With Aston Villa down to ten men, there is real hope for the hosts.
If Forest win here and Villa drop points, it will be Nuno’s side in the Champions League next season.
HT: Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:49 , Matt VerriNothing to split them at half-time.
One big chance each, but Wood and Neto both failed to hit the target.
As it stands, Chelsea will be in the Champions League next season and Forest won’t.
It’s still very, very tight though.
Malik Ouzia at the City Ground
16:48 , Matt VerriA moment of consequence right at the end of the half? Not here, but at Old Trafford.
Emi Martinez has been sent off for Aston Villa.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:47 , Matt Verri45 mins: Elanga skips past Cucurella, who drags him down.
Chelsea man does very, very well to avoid a booking, as those in the stands are keen to point out.
One minute added on.
Malik Ouzia at the City Ground
16:46 , Matt VerriEnzo Maresca has already confirmed that Filip Jorgensen will start the Conference League final on Wednesday so this will probably be Robert Sanchez’s last appearance of the season.
He’s not doing a great deal to quell the suggestion that Chelsea need a new goalkeeper this summer.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:45 , Matt Verri43 mins: Big, big chance!
Forest should be in front. Aine free on the right, he swings in a great cross.
Wood gets there before Sanchez, anything on target and it’s a goal but his volley flies just over.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:44 , Matt Verri41 mins: Neither side can keep the ball, it’s all so scrappy.
Could become absolutely chaotic if one of them take the lead, considering what’s on the line.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:41 , Matt Verri39 mins: Man City are currently 1-0 up at Fulham, but it’s goalless in the other matches with relevance to the top-five race.
That means Chelsea will finish fifth as it stands, with Forest seventh. It’s as you were...
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:39 , Matt Verri37 mins: Both sets of players keen to go down off the ball at every opportunity.
Cucurella the latest to demand a free-kick, referee tells him to get up.
And then we have the Sanchez trademark, booting the ball straight out of play and looking sheepishly over at the touchline.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:37 , Matt Verri34 mins: Ball breaks loose in midfield, Fernandez just smashes it up the pitch.
James was also on the scene and gets caught in the face in the process, so referee pauses play.
This... has not been a classic.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:34 , Matt Verri32 mins: Referee has let a few players off with just a warning but not this time.
Madueke skips inside and Anderson wipes him out with an ugly challenge. Wouldn’t bother complaining about that yellow card personally, but he still gives it a go.
Malik Ouzia at the City Ground
16:32 , Matt VerriCould he have gone at that with his head?
Big, big chance for Chelsea.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:32 , Matt Verri30 mins: Madueke can drive at the Chelsea defence, plays in Palmer on the overlap.
It’s a great first-time cross, Neto free in the middle and he turns it over the bar on the volley from six yards out.
Should really have scored.
Malik Ouzia at the City Ground
16:28 , Matt VerriEnzo Maresca’s really not happy with the way his side are playing.
He’s trying to get a message across to Madueke and James on the other flank.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:28 , Matt Verri26 mins: Gibbs-White plays it straight out of play as Forest try to work it down the right.
Hosts definitely look the more dangerous in attack, Chelsea have offered basically nothing.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:26 , Matt Verri24 mins: Colwill has time to clear in his own box but clearly doesn’t get a shout. Headed behind under no pressure for a corner.
Bit of a delay to that, as Fernandez has gone down. Nothing too serious though, back up with a smile on his face.
Malik Ouzia at the City Ground
16:24 , Matt VerriAnthony Elanga’s been the liveliest player on the pitch so far, which is no real surprise.
Every time you turn on a football match at the moment, someone who used to play for Manchester United is having a good game.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:23 , Matt Verri21 mins: Williams launches himself to the ground, adamant he got a shove from Neto.
It happened about a foot in front of the linesman who doesn’t flag and play goes on. Do normally see those given.
Neto’s cross comes to nothing, but Forest fans are getting irritated.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:21 , Matt Verri19 mins: Colwill with a needless foul, up come the Forest defenders.
Clipped to the back post, Murillo is free and can bring the ball down but the amount of space he has is explained by the flag going up.
Malik Ouzia at the City Ground
16:19 , Matt VerriBoth sides have settled well enough in possession but look a little cautious without it.
No one is committing players high up the pitch to press or leaving big spaces in behind.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:18 , Matt Verri16 mins: Aina keeps lining up for a long throw, and then keeps just going short.
Feel like it would be worth testing out this Chelsea defence, and particularly Sanchez, with something right on top of him.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:16 , Matt Verri14 mins: Madueke allowed to cut inside and keep going and keep going and keep going...
Eventually he gets the shot away from 20 yards out, but slips as he does so and it’s a tame effort in the end. Easily blocked.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:15 , Matt Verri12 mins: Chelsea fairly passive out of possession, which has allowed Forest to grow in confidence.
More like it from the visitors, as Madueke drives forward and Fernandez then whips in a great cross. Nobody there in a blue shirt.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:11 , Matt Verri9 mins: Aina gets to the byline, Cucurella caught out this time. Colwill has to get across to hack it behind for a corner.
Elanga to the back post, Cucurella wins the first header and Madueke then plays it out to Neto, who can lead the counter.
Four Chelsea players charging into the box... can’t find any of them.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:10 , Matt Verri7 mins: Fernandez looks to ping a pass out to Sancho, but it sails over his head and straight out of play.
Neither side particularly on top at the moment, it’s as even as expected.
Malik Ouzia at the City Ground
16:07 , Matt VerriA stray beachball makes it onto the pitch and rather than pop it, Murillo collects it and runs all the way over to the fans to throw it back.
Reminiscent of Jofra Archer at Headingley with what I think was an inflatable watermelon, if anyone remembers that niche reference.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:06 , Matt Verri4 mins: First chance for Forest to get on the front foot.
Gibbs-White is in down the left, cuts inside onto his right foot and James does well to get back and poke the ball away.
Chelsea captain had been out of position.
Nottingham Forest 0-0 Chelsea
16:04 , Matt Verri2 mins: Palmer wins a corner for the Blues inside the opening couple of minutes.
Taken short, Palmer then swings it to the back post and Tosin can’t quite get up to meet it.
Decent start from Chelsea.
KICK-OFF!
16:02 , Matt VerriUnderway on the final day of the Premier League season!
Here we go!
15:56 , Matt VerriTeams are in the tunnel at the City Ground, brilliant atmosphere as you’d expect.
This is not going to be easy for Chelsea - would be a really impressive three points if they can win and secure Champions League qualification.
Malik Ouzia at the City Ground
15:52 , Matt VerriTaiwo Awoniyi is presented to a huge reception from not only the crowd here at the City Ground but also his Forest team-mates, who pause their warm-up to join the applause.
Followed by some choice chants about Gary Neville. Don’t think the Forest players joined in with that one, to be fair.
Yates: Forest will be disappointed if no Champions League football
15:46 , Matt VerriNottingham Forest have already secured European football next season, but captain Ryan Yates admits there will be some frustration if they are not in the Champions League.
"Yes, there'd be a tinge of disappointment, just because of how long we've been up there in the top four or top five," he said.
"But you also have to be really realistic at the same time and know how difficult the Premier League is, the fine margins. There's been some incredible experiences for me and many, many players in the dressing room.
"I can only speak on behalf of my own emotions but there will be a slight disappointment.
"We wanted to win the FA Cup and have secured Champions League but football isn't as easy as that."

Malik Ouzia at the City Ground
15:38Will Pedro Neto deliver for the Blues?
"Pedro Neto goes up front... he looked good when he deputised for Nicolas Jackson earlier in the campaign."

What do Nottingham Forest need?
15:29 , Matt VerriAt one point it seemed Nottingham Forest were nailed on for Champions League qualification, but a dip in form at the worst possible stage of the season sees them start the day outside of the top-five.
Just like Aston Villa, they have to win and hope for a favour - or two - from elsewhere.
Beating Chelsea at home would only be half of the job as they would need one of Newcastle or Villa to not win their respective fixtures.
A draw would only be enough for a top-five finish if Villa lose and Newcastle also lose to Everton by at least 10 goals.
I would suggest the Magpies won’t be losing by that margin...

Maresca looking for his own Gronkjaer
15:21 , Matt VerriSuch is Chelsea’s youth recruitment policy that few of their first-team players probably recall Jesper Gronkjaer’s butterfly wing flap of a goal against Liverpool in 2003.
Their manager, Enzo Maresca, though, knows it well: “Claudio [Ranieiri] was manager, no?” he nodded on Friday.
Gronkjaer’s famous winner secured Champions League football and rapidly set in motion the chain of events that would turn the Blues from a club in danger of financial ruin into the wealthy behemoth that conquered all during Roman Abramovich’s reign.
The split stakes are not quite so extreme ahead of Sunday’s final day trip to Nottingham Forest, but they are hefty nonetheless.
Win and Chelsea will return to the Champions League after a two-year absence, making a success of Maresca’s debut season, opening doors in this summer’s transfer market and giving the Todd Boehly-Clearlake era perhaps its first concrete proof of progress on-field. Fail to do so, and unless unlikely favours are forthcoming elsewhere, each of those outcomes will be reversed.
Little wonder, then, that Maresca is looking for a Gronkjaer of his own.

Hosts have arrived!
15:11 , Matt VerriPlenty of smiles in the Nottingham Forest camp.
They’ve already secured European football, now it’s time to see if they can qualify for the Champions League.
If they beat Chelsea and either Newcastle or Aston Villa drop points this afternoon, Forest will do just that.

Maresca sends clear Fernandez message
15:04 , Matt VerriEnzo Maresca insists Enzo Fernandez is going nowhere amid links with Real Madrid - and says the Argentine will be even better next season.
After a slow start to the campaign in which he struggled to nail down a regular first-team shirt, Fernandez has emerged as one of Maresca’s key men.
The 24-year-old registered seven goals and 13 assists across all competitions and forged a fine midfield partnership with Moises Caicedo that has helped steer Chelsea to the brink of the Champions League.
Fernandez signed for Chelsea in January 2023 and still has seven years to run on his contract, but has reportedly emerged as a target for Real Madrid as incoming manager Xabi Alonso seeks to reshape his midfield.
“Enzo is a main player for us, one of the captains, one of the leaders,” Maresca said, when asked about those reports. “This season he has been very, very good. He can be even better next season starting from the first day.
“So, nothing to say about speculation. He is focused on us and that’s the most important thing.”
Pressed on whether Fernandez would be staying at the club this summer, he replied: “Yes”.

Neto up front
14:56 , Matt VerriAs we suspected, it’s Pedro Neto leading the line for Chelsea this afternoon.
Marc Guiu is back on the bench, but no Christopher Nkunku in the squad despite Enzo Maresca suggesting he was fit and available.
Reece James at right-back, Romeo Lavia among the substitutes.

Stand by...
14:40 , Matt VerriAll the team news from the City Ground coming up in the next five minutes.
How Enzo Maresca opts to line up in attack is the big uncertainty for now...
Maresca admits top-five frustration
14:31 , Matt VerriEnzo Maresca is “frustrated” that Chelsea’s Champions League fate remains in the balance, claiming data proves his side already “did enough” to secure a top-five finish.
Only the top two have a better defensive record than Chelsea, but Maresca’s team have scored the fewest goals of the current top five and missed more big chances - 81 - than any Premier League side bar Liverpool.
The upshot is that they still need three points away to Nottingham Forest to guarantee a return to Europe’s top competition.
That is in odd contrast with London rivals Tottenham, who are 12 places behind Chelsea but go into the final weekend already assured of Champions League football after winning the Europa League in midweek.
“I feel frustrated, not because of Tottenham,” he said. “I feel frustrated because if you see the data, we are the first or second club in creating chances.
“I’m not thinking about Tottenham. If they’re going to play Champions League next season, it’s because they have done something good, winning the Europa League.
“The frustration is more because I think overall we did enough to finish top four or top five. The numbers are there, offensively and defensively. We are the third-best defence in the league, but we have the risk of not finishing in the top four or top five.”

Why have Forest barred Neville?
14:23 , Matt VerriGary Neville has been highly critical of Forest and owner Evangelos Marinakis this season.
He described Marinakis walking onto the pitch and exchanging words with head coach Nuno Espirito Santo after the recent draw with Leicester as "scandalous".
Neville urged Nuno to quit the club and a social media post of his further enraged Marinakis, who had threatened Sky with legal action over comments made by the pundit earlier in the season.
After Forest's 2-0 defeat at Everton last year, the club issued a statement on social media questioning the integrity of video assistant referee Stuart Atwell after claiming they had been denied three penalties.
Neville's response to that, comparing Forest's actions to those of a "mafia gang", prompted an apology from Sky after they had been contacted by Marinakis' lawyers.
Neville denied entry to City Ground
14:15 , Matt VerriSky Sports pundit Gary Neville has been refused entry to the City Ground by Nottingham Forest for this afternoon’s match.
Neville was scheduled to be part of Sky's commentary team as both sides bid to secure Champions League football next season, but Forest have declined to grant him media accreditation.
Former Manchester United defender Neville said on Instagram: "I was contacted by Sky Sports earlier on in the week and told that I would be commentating at the City Ground on Sunday for the Nottingham Forest v Chelsea match.
"I was informed yesterday by Sky Sports that Nottingham Forest would not give me an accreditation or access to the stadium as a co-commentator. I've had no choice but to withdraw from the coverage.
"I've dished out my fair share of criticism and praise in the last 14 years of doing this job and have never come close to this unprecedented action.
"Personally, I think it's disappointing that a great club like Nottingham Forest have been reduced to making such a decision. While they have every right to choose who they let into their own stadium, it's symptomatic of things that have happened over the last 12 months with the club.
"I wish the coaching staff, players and fans of the club all the best in their quest to achieve Champions League football."

Standard Sport prediction
14:02 , Matt VerriIf this season has taught us anything about Chelsea, it is that they are fallible, as seen in Conference League losses to Servette and Legia Warsaw.
They have been strong in the run-in, losing just one of their last eight league fixtures (W5 D2), but suffered a major setback as they lost 2-0 to Newcastle and saw Jackson sent off. Avoiding another defeat in Nottingham is crucial.
As Maresca will be judged entirely on whether or not he qualifies for the Champions League, these are three points he cannot afford to drop.
Whether he can rally his side remains to be seen, but the players will know exactly what is on the line and should be trusted to rise to the occasion.
Chelsea to win, 2-1.
Chelsea team news
13:53 , Matt VerriChelsea have an important decision to make up front.
Manager Enzo Maresca will once again have to do without first-choice striker Nicolas Jackson, who is still suspended following his straight red card against Newcastle a fortnight ago.
The Italian is, however, boosted by the returns of Christopher Nkunku and Marc Guiu. Nkunku has been sidelined for the last month with what was said to be a minor injury, while Guiu has not featured since the home win over West Ham on transfer deadline day at the start of February.
While Maresca confirmed that both players are available to play some part at the City Ground, he seems unlikely to throw either straight into his starting lineup.
He therefore faces a choice between persisting with academy graduate Tyrique George up top, or perhaps turning to Pedro Neto.
Predicted Chelsea XI: Sanchez; James, Chalobah, Colwill, Cucurella; Caicedo, Fernandez; Madueke, Palmer, Sancho; Neto

Nottingham Forest team news
13:47 , Matt VerriForest are still without striker Taiwo Awoniyi after he underwent emergency abdominal surgery earlier this month. He is on the road to recovery, but will not feature again until next season.
Having struggled with injury for much of this campaign, Murillo is again chasing a return to fitness as he deals with an ankle issue, but Nuno Espirito Santo is confident he will be able to feature. The only other absence for the hosts is Eric da Silva Moreira.
