Nottingham Forest transfers: Brewster battle, rivals' stance set out, striker linked

The January transfer window is fast approaching, and with it the first chance for Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper to make any changes to his squad.

The Reds had a very busy summer, both in terms of incomings and outgoings, amid something of an overhaul of the dressing room.

All of that took place while former boss Chris Hughton was still in charge, making January the first opportunity for Cooper to make any tweaks, following his appointment in September.

Players are already being linked with moves to and from the City Ground, so here’s a round-up of the latest updates.

Swans raid?

Swansea City midfielder Jay Fulton has been linked with a move to the City Ground, as per Swansea Independent.

It is understood that the 27-year-old has fallen down the pecking order under Russell Martin after penning a three-year contract extension with the club.

In 14 Championship games so far, Fulton has only four starts to his name, in comparison to the 47 appearances in all competitions he made under former manager Steve Cooper, last season.

The last time he has kicked a ball was at the end of September in the 1-0 home win against Huddersfield.

'Agent Lyle'

“Agent Lyle” has vowed to get back on duty for Nottingham Forest ahead of the January transfer window.

Striker Lyle Taylor has been teasing for some time how he is keen to get loanees Djed Spence and Max Lowe to put pen to paper for the Reds on a permanent basis, using the hashtag #AgentLyle on social media.

And with January fast approaching on the horizon, the front man is seemingly set to ramp up that campaign as the pair continue to make a big impact.

This month, Taylor has been raising money for Cancer Research UK as part of his annual Pink October initiative.

Rivals' stance

Peterborough United have rubbished the suggestion they are keen on reported Nottingham Forest target Jili Buyabu.

The Reds are among a number of teams linked with the non-league midfielder, who plays for Hornchurch, ahead of the January transfer window.

Posh were said to also be keeping tabs on the youngster, while Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester City have reportedly sent scouts to watch him, according to the Non-League Paper.

Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson, however, has dismissed the speculation, saying Buyabu isn’t part of the club’s thinking.

Blades battle

Nottingham Forest could have a fight on their hands if they do look to sign Sheffield United youngster Rhian Brewster in January.

The Reds have been linked with a loan move for the attacker when the transfer window opens, with reports suggesting they are monitoring his situation.

Brewster has been struggling for regular game time this term, making just three Championship starts for the Blades.

Since his big money move to Bramall Lane from Liverpool in 2020, 20 of his 38 appearances have come from off the bench. And his only goal for the club so far came against Carlisle United in the Carabao Cup back in August.

Transfer interest

Brennan Johnson says he would be happy to commit his future to Nottingham Forest - but his focus is on picking up points rather than signing new contracts.

The Nigel Doughty Academy product has been in great form so far this season, becoming a regular starter and notching his first goals for the club.

He attracted interest from elsewhere in the summer, following sparkling performances on loan at Lincoln City, with Brentford being rebuffed in their attempts to lure him away.

Discussions have taken place over fresh terms for Johnson, as his current deal expires in 2023. And the youngster gave the impression of being relaxed about the situation.

'Keeping tabs'

Nottingham Forest have been linked with young Watford goalkeeper Myles Roberts ahead of the January transfer window.

The teenager is said to have attracted the attention of a number of Football League clubs, including the Reds - most likely with their youth set-up in mind.

Birmingham City and Forest have made “checks” on the shot-stopper in recent weeks, according to Football League World.

They report Portsmouth, Charlton Athletic, Leyton Orient and Sutton United are also keeping tabs on the 19-year-old.

Situation explained

Defender Max Lowe has quickly made an impact since signing for Nottingham Forest in the summer.

The Sheffield United loanee has cemented his place in the team, with the wing-back role particularly important in new boss Steve Cooper’s 3-4-3 system.

Lowe has made six appearances so far, and netted his first goal for the Reds in Cooper’s first match in charge - securing a 1-1 draw at home to Millwall.

It is the kind of form which has left many Forest fans expressing a wish for the 24-year-old - along with some of the other loan players - to eventually make the move to the City Ground on a permanent basis.

Striker speculation

Nottingham Forest have been linked with a January move for Aston Villa striker Keinan Davis.

The Reds tried to bring in another forward in the summer, but didn’t manage to get any deals over the line.

They did strengthen their attacking resources through Philip Zinckernagel and Xande Silva, with the latter able to play across the front line, while the likes of Joao Carvalho and Brennan Johnson returned from loans elsewhere. But they do still lack strength in depth when it comes to out-and-out strikers.

Villa are said to be prepared to send Davis out on loan when the winter opens, as he looks to get game time under his belt.
