Nottingham Forest transfer target wants permanent move away from Newcastle United - report

Dwight Gayle is said to prefer a permanent move away from Newcastle United.

A reported transfer target for Nottingham Forest , Gayle is also said to be of interest to Championship promotion rivals West Bromwich Albion.

The Athletic say that, while a loan deal could do for now, Gayle is keen to seal a permanent move from St James' Park.

Gayle joined Newcastle from Crystal Palace in 2016 and has scored 29 times in 79 goals.

The 29-year-old spent last season on loan at The Hawthorns, scoring 24 goals in 41 games as the Baggies reached the Championship play-offs.

Gayle is out of the picture at Newcastle, though, starting just once this season -  the 4-1 defeat to Manchester United on Boxing Day.

He is a prolific Championship marksman, firing 59 goals in 100 matches at second tier level while chipping in with 16 assists.

Newcastle have previously slapped a £15 million price tag on Gayle , who boss Steve Bruce wants to remain on Tyneside.

“I’ve had many conversations about Dwight," he said in December .

“I’m sure the one thing he will want is a chance and so far, he’s only come on as a sub a couple of times.

“Of course, a lot of that was due to injury.

“I’ve said many times he’s an important part (of the team).

“If we’re going to go forward, we need three or four strikers.

“I don’t know how many times I’ve said it about Dwight Gayle but I’ve always thought very highly of him.

“I think I tried to buy him three times but could never quite afford him.

“I hope he stays and honestly hope he will get his chance sooner rather than later, and when he gets it, I hope he takes it.”
